Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy, Full-Time

The Pharmacy Technician will assist in processing medication and prescription orders ensuring that medications are promptly and safely delivered to patients. Checks and receives drug purchase orders, delivers medication to nursing units and conducts cassette exchange.

Principal Responsibilities

The Pharmacy Technician:

  1. Dispenses medication to fill prescription requests for inpatient Unit Dose Cassettes and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab sites of care.
  2. Prepacks tablets, capsules, and liquids under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist and according to policy.
  3. Prepares and delivers injections and I.V. admixtures.
  4. Orders medications and supplies from wholesalers and other pharmaceutical sources, inspecting incoming merchandise for accuracy.
  5. Monitors stock for expiration dates, preparing returns for outdated drugs to wholesalers and manufacturers for credit.
  6. Maintains cleanliness of the Pharmacy and equipment.
  7. Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

  1. Reports directly to the Manager, Pharmacy Operations

Job Requirements:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Pharmacy Technician Certification required. Pharmacy students in good standing at an ACPE approved school of pharmacy are not required to be certified but must show proof of current enrollment.
  3. Current Illinois Pharmacy Technician license.
  4. Minimum 1 year of hospital based experience.
  5. Experience adding measured drugs or nutrients to intravenous solutions under sterile conditions to prepare intravenous (IV) preparation under pharmacist supervision.
  6. Strong mathematical ability to interpret prescription orders, dispense medication including compounding of tablets to liquid.
  7. Strong customer service and communication skills needed to interact with patients, coworkers, healthcare professionals, and vendors.
  8. Time management and multi-tasking ability required to work in a fast paced, time sensitive environment to ensure timely delivery of daily cart and orders as needed.
  9. Demonstrated follow through, decision making, and analytical skills required to address discrepancies, missing medications and ordering new medications.
  10. Experience with Microsoft Office, Cerner and Talyst auto carousel, preferred.
  11. Ability to push delivery carts weighing up to 40 pounds, lift and stock items for delivery and inventory control.

Working Conditions

  1. Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
