Job Title: ​Technician I (Facilities & Equipment Service)

Location: Raleigh, NC

Shift: Days (Monday - Friday 7:00am - 4:00pm)

Purpose statement:

The Technician I role supports the reliability and sustainability of custom automated laboratory equipment in a high throughput environment.  Within IDT’s quality system associates will coordinate and perform preventative maintenance services and address unplanned maintenance services on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, fluidics, and optical devices/systems, as well as PLC Controlled systems. 

Job Specific Essential Functions:

  • Ensures operation of custom automated laboratory equipment by completing preventive and unplanned service in compliance with IDT’s quality system. 
  • Troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, fluidics, and optical devices/systems, as well as PLC Controlled systems
  • Coordinates events with manufacturing to ensure preventative and unplanned maintenance is completed.
  • Gathers and reviews data to support maintenance database for assets and instrumentation.
  • Follows Standard Operating Procedure and Work Instruction documents while performing maintenance procedures.
  • Recommends actions for continuous improvement and cost reduction.
  • Provides input and constructive feedback to design staff regarding new and existing equipment, to streamline troubleshooting and service requirements and to increase product quality. 
  • Collaborates among cross-functional teams to support and accomplish production objectives.
  • Resolves complex problems working with a team and individually.
  • Practices safe working habits, follows all IDT safety policies. Identifies, corrects, and reports potential safety hazards.
  • Executes multiple assigned activities in parallel to support production and engineering improvements.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s degree in Engineering or Maintenance related program or equivalent technical education or experience preferred.

Professional Experience:

  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, fluidics, optical devices/systems, controls systems and other equipment as typically acquired by an Associate's degree (Engineering or Maintenance) or at least two years of related experience required.
  • Ability to read and understand part drawings and specifications required. 
  • Familiarity with automation equipment testing and troubleshooting preferred. 
  • Familiarity with Beckhoff TwinCat/EtherCat or similar structured text control systems preferred. 
  • Familiarity with Unitronic or similar ladder logic control systems preferred. 

Other Job Qualifications

  • Ability to use hand and power tools. 
  • Skill to using a soldering iron. 
  • Ability to follow diagrams, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications. 
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with suppliers, customers, employees, and all levels of management. 
  • Adaptability to performing under stress when confronted with emergent, critical, unusual, or dangerous situations, or situation in which working speed and sustained attention are make-or-break aspects of the job.

  • Sitting: to assume a position in which the weight is largely supported by the buttocks, usually with the body vertical and the thighs horizontal.
  • Pushing/Pulling: using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward/using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Climbing: stairs, stools, ramps, ladders.

Visual Acuity:

  • Work requires close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to read pertinent printed material and distinguish colors.
  • Ability to accurately read measurements on equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and read written documentation; use of computer.
