Role : Principle Platform Engineer

Location : London

Team Description

Lead technical delivery and work closely with teams including software development, system and database engineers, application support and architects to provide development, configuration and support of the banks applications; including architecture, installation, release, change and configuration management, performance monitoring and tuning and quality management across all Windows and Linux systems.

Description of role and key responsibilities

Follow and teach "infrastructure as code" patterns, using automation and scripting, treating the stack as software, and using development methodologies such as scripting in a first-class language, source and revision control, image and artefact management, continuous integration and delivery. Provide technical leadership and real-world experience in modern delivery and deployment techniques and platforms including cloud, container, on-premises and physical systems.

Lead the development and design of automation, infrastructure, configuration and application development scripts from new; create repeatable, auditable code and configurations to manage and deploy applications and servers, and write custom tests and checks during that process, to monitor and ensure availability, reliability and quality.

Deliver ownership around system performance; maintain, evolve and develop the banks automated system, host, application and service level monitoring, logging and alerting systems. Provide monitoring support and leadership to the other internal teams who depend or develop on and support systems with them.

Provide obsessive customer service and expertise to technical groups such as business facing development teams, and engineering, information security and operations in Investec IT; lead the development and mentoring of less senior engineers in the DevOps team to do the same.

Core skills and knowledge

Technical Skills (Required)
Exceptional cloud and web service architecture experience in Microsoft Azure to expert practitioner level. Experience in Amazon AWS would be a bonus as well as Google Compute, including delivery mechanisms such as EC2, VMWare, Docker containers or Kubernetes.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Azure and its toolset (Boards, Pipelines, Repos, Test Plans, and Artifacts)
Able to work effectively through the full technology stack; can and will dive-deep over any aspect of OS, Network, Database or Application
Windows experience to system administrator level
Linux experience (Red Hat, CentOS or Amazon Linux) to system administrator level
Knowledge of networking concepts such as L4/L7 load balancing, peering, VPN, VLAN, sub-netting and masking, routing, DNS, DHCP and IP address management
Wide knowledge of observability stack and how to troubleshoot effectively; Grafana, InfluxDB, Prometheus, Kibana, ElasticSearch, Splunk, Dynatrace, ServiceNow
Experience of supporting web-based server technology stacks across various operating systems; IIS, nginx, Apache, Tomcat, HAproxy, ELB, NetScaler etc
Scripting ability across various languages; Bash, Perl, Python, Ruby, Powershell, Golang, Java, Javascript
Knowledge of automated configuration management using Puppet, Chef or Ansible; understanding automated CMDB provisioning
Experience of using and managing source-code control systems; Azure DevOps(essential), GitHub, GitLab, BitBucket, Stash, SVN, TFS
Experience of supporting an application delivery pipeline pattern and associated tools; Azure DevOps(essential), Jenkins, TeamCity, Octopus, Packer, Terraform, Artifacts
Experience of working with and directly supporting technical delivery, development teams and other highly technical internal customers of all levels of experience

Technical Skills (Advantageous)
Knowledge of financial markets and industry financial reporting standard.
RHCE, Azure Certified (essential), MCSE, AWS Certified(bonus), Puppet certified
Programming ability in a high level language
