Head of Project - Type 26 Shipbuild

Are you an experienced Senior Programme Manager or Head of Project? We currently have a vacancy for a Head of Project within the Type 26 Shipbuild Delivery team at our site in Govan. This rarely advertised leadership role will be responsible for the delivery of a Type 26 ship, overseeing all programme management and production activity.

The BAE Systems Naval Ships business has an exciting range of large scale, high value contracts currently underway across its sites in Glasgow, Portsmouth and Bristol. The Type 26 programme where construction is already under way on first 3 ships at our site in Glasgow to deliver state of the art frigates to the Royal Navy Customer. The Type 26 will replace the UK's Type 23 frigates, with the first set to enter service in the 2020s and the last remaining in service beyond the middle of the century. This role will be front and centre in the delivery of a Type 26 frigate.

Leading a multidisciplinary team of Production, Programme Management, Engineering and Supply Chain staff you will be accountable for the delivery of a Type 26 frigate to cost, schedule and quality within our Safe Systems of Work. This senior leadership position will manage all aspects of the ship build programme including Subcontractor management. You will report to the Type 26 Programme Delivery Director. The successful candidate will be an experienced Senior Programme Manager or Head of Project with exposure to a complex engineering or manufacturing environment. A key part of this role will be to lead and inspire a large cross functional team to deliver this complex product.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to join BAE Systems as a Senior Leader and hold responsibility over one of the largest programmes within the UK Defence arena.

Your main responsibilities as a Head of Project will involve:

Lead delivery of a Type 26 vessel driving programme performance to cost, schedule and to highest quality standards.
Own the implementation of Safe Systems of Work.
Control Account responsibility for all aspects of the build programme with a budget in excess of £150m.
Make key project decisions based on project performance data, analysis and production issues.
Lead and inspire a cross functional team to deliver one of the most complex products in Defence.
Lead programme communications to the customer and the Type 26 senior leadership team.

Your skills and qualifications:

Extensive programme management experience in a senior level position in a complex engineering or manufacturing environment.
Proven ability to lead and inspire a cross functional team, endangering a high-performance culture.
Extensive experience in managing senior project sponsors and customer relationships.
Strong knowledge and experience of engineering, supply chain, ship build, test & commissioning and Acceptance.
Control Account Management experience with direct budget control in excess of £150m.
ILM or equivalent senior leadership qualification.
APM Chartered preferred
