Our client are a small specialist engineering company based in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. They specialise in load testing and monitoring components and structures to ensure they are safe in their everyday use.

The role is diverse with every job being different and no two days being the same. You must be able to think fast, problem solve and devise practical solutions to engineering problems, whilst working accurately, is a must.

The work load is dynamic and will take you all over the UK and occasionally overseas – it can range from load testing a shelf in a supermarket to simulating a crowd loading on the barriers at a stadium or monitoring the movement of a beam on an oil rig.

The successful Structural Test Technician will be mainly required to set up and conduct load tests at sites and to follow through with providing results to clients. These tests may need to be done on fixings, barriers, beams, walls, floors, handrails, buildings or bridges.

Work sites may be located around the UK (generally London with some day trips / overnight stays elsewhere).

This role is most suitable for persons who enjoy practical work and being out on sites / spending most of their time outside of an office.

The work can be physically demanding with lifting of 20kg regularly required on a daily basis.

Use of power tools and heavy machinery will also be a key part of this role and so previous experience of operating this type of equipment would be desirable however not essential as this can be trained for the right person.


The key tasks that the employee will be expected to complete are:

Set up load tests and conduct the testing, sometimes with the client witnessing the test
To complete results sheets to record the test and findings
Speak to clients on the phone, and via e-mail, to understand their needs, and to discuss solutions
Write and keep track of quotes and invoices
Help to maintain and improve equipment Requirements:

Applicants are required to:

Be thorough, reliable and enjoy practical work
Have good communication skills
Have good written English skills for basic report writing, and Microsoft Excel skills for output data recording and reporting
Be able to work flexibly as we sometimes have early starts and long days and may need to work away from home for short periods
Be able to work at heights and in confined spaces and also be able to do manual lifting (training will be provided)
Have at least 3 years experience as a technician
Have a full driver’s license
Comfortable working in a lone working environment as the role will include both lone and team working.
Practical skills (such as welding, soldering) as well as previous experience of load test work would be advantageous. However, these are not necessary as on the job training will be provided.
