Quality Lab Technician

Position Summary:

Responsible for performing quality checks on finished products prior to shipping, manufacturing and product lines. Individual will also support Quality Chemists in performing their responsibilities by preparing solutions; spectrophotometric testing using UV-Vis and FTIR instrumentation; microscopic testing of raw materials or finished product for foreign substances; testing for moisture content; and, may perform technically complex procedures in a specialized area under supervision. The individual must be able to objectively review negative test results and interact appropriately with other employees affected by the resul t.

Essential Functions:

Evaluates quality of finished products prior to shipping.

Collects appropriate retained samples and maintains retained storage area.

Verifies cleanliness and suitability of manufacturing and packaging lines.

Analyzes materials prior to incorporation into products.

Review labels for accuracy and compliance.

Assist with Document Management.

Audit Records.

Maintains a safety conscious attitude.

Maintain excellent attendance.

Marginal Functions

May assist packaging lines during high workflow periods.

Assist chemists preparing solutions required for analytical instrumentation.

Work with Master Planner and Inventory Manager on all rejected products, labels. Coordinate any return / reorder.

Work with all departments to coordinate workflow.

Maintain open communication with Purchasing, Sales, and all other Departments.

Work with Receiving Department to expedite materials based on production requirements

Physical Requirements:

Vision, hearing and speaking to meet performance standard.

May be required to wear a respirator.

Manufacturing environment.

Able to lift up to 35 lbs.

Equipment Used:

UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, FT-IR, Iso-GRID Microbial Analysis, Computers, terminals, printers, calculators, phones, photocopiers and fax machine.

Work Environment:

May require overtime during peak periods or as business needs dictate.

Requires compliance to all department and company Good Manufacturing Practices and Standard Operation Procedures.

Requires ability to work in an environment that contains high temperatures, fumes, dust, odors, noise, chemicals, temperature variations, and varying levels of ventilation.

Requires team-orientation, common sense and good judgment, professional behavior, effective communication (oral and written), and problem solving skills.


Associate degree in Laboratory Science related field or equivalent experience.

Two years of experience performing routine, standardized analytical tests and laboratory.

Familiarity with State of Oregon Food Handling regulations.

Familiarity with laboratory analytical equipment.

Working understanding of current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

Possess effective communication skills with both technical and non-technical personnel within team management environment.

Ability to negotiate with outside vendors.

Experience with personal computers (spreadsheet, Word, E-mail) and other PC or server applications.

Requires ability to take and follow directions, time management skills, organizational development and improvement.

Critical thinking and analytical skills required to perform the essential job functions listed on this job description.
