Job Summary

Directs, supervises, institutes, and evaluates patient care services and activities during assigned shift. Intervenes where necessary to assure optimal patient outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education/Training - Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of nursing is required
  • Experience - A minimum of 2 years of acute clinical and supervisory nursing experience.
  • License/Certification/Registration - Valid RN license in the State of Maryland. CPR (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification. ACLS certification is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities - Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists attending physicians and aids patients and families as needed. Coordinates and reports outcome of nursing activities performed on behalf of the patient. Admits patients and arranges emergency operations and other services.
  • Assists in selecting, training, orienting, and assigning department staff. Assists in developing standards of performance, evaluates performance, and conducts performance management planning. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with subordinates to review programs, provide feedback, discuss new developments, and exchange information.
  • Assists in the development and recommendation of department operating budget and ensures that the department operates within the budget.
  • Consults with administration concerning management of assigned areas and all related matters.
  • Directs maintenance of departmental facilities, equipment, supplies, and materials in a condition to promote efficiency, health, comfort, and safety of patients and staff. Supports therapeutic environment for patients and families.
  • Functions as liaison between patient care administration and medical staff.
  • Manages supply activities assuring adequate availability, utilization of equipment and materials. Communicates material and supply needs to Materials Manager. Participates in product selection and evaluation, as appropriate.
  • Monitors high risk and complicated cases and institutes appropriate actions.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Prepares written documentation as required. Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records. Maintains required reports, records, statistics, etc.
  • Receives and reviews preceding shift reports, makes rounds of units, and notes patients' conditions. Coordinates department wide staffing patterns to meet safe and efficient staffing levels for each unit. Adjusts staffing to meet patient care needs and to provide adequate and fiscally responsible coverage of all units. Assists managers and coordinators with staffing through coordination of float pool staff.
