Mechanical Engineer

NRE is searching for a Mechanical Engineer to work in Mt. Vernon, Illinois!

Our Mechanical Engineer is responsible for new product design efforts throughout a products life cycle. This will insure products meet customer specifications, regulatory and industry standards by applying engineering principals to identify, analyze & solve technical problems to develop solutions for new product design. Our engineers will also perform detailed design and analysis for custom locomotives and associated equipment, individually and as part of a team.

Job Responsibilities/Tasks:

· Oversee product design development control.

· Contributes to team by completing tasks to achieve project goals and schedules

· Review and analyze project specifications

o Design output documentation: verified and validated against design input requirements.

o Review of the design output, confirming the design contains acceptance criteria references, identifies critical design characteristics, and review prior to release.

o Host & participate in design reviews

· Produce 3D models and 2D manufacturing documentation (drawings).

o Produce large, complex 3D mechanical designs

o Design and develop weldments

o Prepare Electrical & Mechanical component layouts and assemblies

o Layout routing arrangements for conduit, cable, tubing and piping

o Create – generate manufacturing drawings (drafting)

o Drawings & final Bill of Material documentation

o Deliver 2D production drawings, in a timely manner, to manufacturing to meet project deadlines.

o Shall possess a working knowledge of GD&T.

· Interact with Suppliers on component design and selection.

o Write specifications and test procedures for various components.

· Shall have familiarity with manufacturing processes

· Support to Finite Element Analysis (FEA)

· Perform Reverse engineering

· Incorporate design changes & release through a document control process

· Perform Engineering calculations and assist in problem solving activities

· Perform validation tests (clearance profile test, noise test, air flow test, vibration test, and fuel restriction test) for locomotives.

o Assist in any other routine or type testing of the locomotive(s) as required per project specification.

· Create field modification instructions for mechanical systems.

· Maintain professional and organized office setting

· Maintains safe and clean work environment

· Other duties as assigned


· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering.

· Minimum 2 years of experience designing & drafting mechanical components in 3D CAD platform (Autodesk inventor preferred)

· Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Vault, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Work Environment:

· Day shift in an office environment

· Occasional, limited work in shop environment
