Leader - Cost Accounting

Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Leader – Cost Accounting will serve as the thought leader for Darigold’s costing activities and be responsible for driving processes, disciplines, and best practices for the company’s costing activities that support strategic objectives, product pricing, margin analysis, and decision support. This position requires strong leadership qualities, communication, and collaboration skills along with a strong command of product costing in a food manufacturing environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (other duties as assigned):

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and lead the Company’s costing activities to ensure accurate and consistent costing practices across all Darigold plants, including the development and implementation of standardized costing procedures.
  • Gain deep understanding of plant processes, spending time at each location as needed to more accurately assign costs including the measurement of materials used, labor time studies, etc.
  • Facilitate the continuous review of standard cost drivers through an activity-based approach to understanding of raw material usage/cost, packaging and ingredients, resources, costs, product shrinks, and labor and overhead application. Monitor product standards through monthly analysis of manufacturing and purchase price variances.
  • Manage the cost accounting staff, standard cost maintenance, month end close, and controls to support accurate costing by month, business, and product.
  • Assess and reflect in each product’s standard an appropriate yield factor that accurately reflects the cost of materials consumed in production.
  • Evaluate and develop recommendations for the classification of fixed and variable costs at each plant and ensure that accounting practices are in place to accurately capture costs by product group.
  • Partners with and provides direction to Plant Controllers as needed to ensure the proper treatment and setting of standard costs for each location and translation of the annual budget into standard cost inputs.
  • Ensure that the standard costs that are established for each product are directly aligned with that product’s Bill of Material (“BOM) and validate that all systems utilizing standard cost information are pulling from the single source of truth.
  • Coordinate as necessary to ensure the consistent reporting of inventory values including analysis resulting from changes in standards.
  • Develop reporting that provide management insights into cost accounting variances – e.g. cost absorption, material usage variances, purchase price variances, labor variances, etc.
  • Support the Finance FP&A and commercial teams with ad hoc information requests.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Finance and/or accounting experience in a food manufacturing environment with intricate understanding of manufacturing processes, cost analysis, yields/losses, and metrics.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, ability to work collaboratively across functions and departments, and supervision of direct team.
  • Experience working with Enterprise systems (Oracle OPM a plus) and reporting tools.
  • Strong Project Management skills, with the ability to bring together resources and tools to execute change effectively.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, collaborate, and develop relationships across functions in both a plant and corporate environment.
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Possesses a high-level of initiative and accountability.
  • Persistent attention to detail, accuracy, and precision.
  • Proficient end user computing skills with advance knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Motivates and leads by example thus showing the ability to organize, support and clearly communicate with personnel across all levels of the organization.

Education, Experience and Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting, MBA, or Certification (CMA, CPA) is a plus.
  • 10+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment (Food Production is desired)
  • Some travel required (less than 25%)
