Position Summary

Information Technology interns at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Kansas City (“Blue KC”) can expect to engage with various teams driving innovation throughout the healthcare industry and across the greater Kansas City area. Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in department and company activities such as the Kansas City Royals and Sporting KC events. The purpose and intent of this program is to identify and develop the next generation of talent for Blue KC.  The program will provide experiential knowledge for degree-seeking students who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.


  • Information Technology interns can expect a challenging and rewarding experience.  Responsibilities will include a blend of hands on work alongside exposure to multiple aspects of our company and industry.  Work will be balanced between assigned project work alongside training and development activities. 


    Specific responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Completion of software development and project management tasks as part of a mini-hackathon or crowd-sourcing event,
  • Completion of individually assigned tasks within assigned projects,
  • Completion of team based tasks,
  • Serving in project management roles both as a leader and team member, and
  • Participation in various development opportunities with Blue KC leadership

Minimum Requirements

  • Candidates must be enrolled at an accredited university or college and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0
  • Additionally, intern candidates will typically be pursuing a BA/BS/MA/MS/MBA degree in one of the following fields:  Business Administration, Finance, Communications, Healthcare Management, Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Marketing, Engineering, or Technology

Preferred Requirements

Candidates will also need to demonstrate a blend of talents and skills including:

  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem solving, interpersonal, leadership and communication skills
  • Understanding of technology and software development life cycles
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Motivated to learn something new; embrace opportunities to learn and grow
  • A passion for innovation and creative problem solving
  • Pragmatic ability to think on your feet and adapt to shifting priorities and do whatever it takes to get the job done
  • Time management skills
