About the Position

CQ Roll Call is seeking an energetic and skilled journalist to join the team that chronicles House and Senate members, their offices, elections, and biographies. The ideal candidate will have strong research, writing, interviewing and reporting skills, be highly organized and have a foundational knowledge of congressional structure and process. Strong collaboration is a must, as the candidate would work daily with CQ Roll Call's team of reporters, editors, and researchers to produce excellent content for our newsletter, website, mobile app, and other products. 

About the CQ Roll Call Team

The Members team covers members of Congress and their staffs, including writing and updating profiles of each member, providing real-time biographical news updates and tracking data on their offices, staffs and elections. The team often collaborates with other newsroom teams on stories and features providing insight about members. Our work involves interviewing members of Congress or congressional candidates to write biographical sketches, keeping up-to-date on political, policy and personal developments affecting members of Congress and detailed research, reporting and tracking of biographical information and other types of data.

About You

The candidate will have demonstrated the skill to provide accurate, clear, fast and smart news on multiple platforms. Applicants should have experience at a news organization, familiarity with Congress, a commitment to strong, watchdog coverage of policymaking in Washington, and the ability to convey sometimes complicated information in a clear and lively manner.

What To Expect In This Position:

    • Research, write and fact-check biographical and congressional data, elections outcome information, and district information
    • Write clearly and concisely on deadline in accordance with CQ Roll Call and Associated Press editorial style standards
    • Monitor events in Congress for changes in biographical information
    • Use news judgment to identify opportunities to update existing member profiles and pursue follow-up news or feature stories as needed.
    • Use established best practices to share information through social media
    • Assist with production duties to ensure timely publication of updates
    • Maintain a strong awareness of congressional politics
    • Regularly write  pieces for CQRC publication 
    • Conceive, pitch, report and write news feature stories related to individual members, demographical trends among members or other related information
    • Other duties as assigned

What Sets You Apart:

    • Bachelors degree or equivalent in journalism, English, political or government studies, or other relevant disciplines
    • Some reporting experience, preferably on Capitol Hill
    • Strong knowledge of Congress and federal agencies
    • Strong knowledge of members of Congress
    • Willingness to work weekends and evenings as needed
    • Excellent research, reporting and writing skills
    • Ability to use social media to promote content and research verifiable information
    • Ability to develop sources, research interview subjects, craft questions that elicit strong storytelling and quickly pivot to pertinent follow up questions in interviews
    • Adaptability to new technologies
    • Ability to work long hours and meet strict deadlines
    • An aptitude for professional communications in a high-level setting
