Aggregate Industries, a leading supplier of quality construction building materials in the United States, has an immediate opening for a Rail Brakeman to support Aggregate Operations in Bladensburg, Maryland. The position is primarily responsible for safely and efficiently spotting and switching railcars throughout the railway yard, coupling and uncoupling rail cars, maintaining track areas and loading and unloading of the conveyors.


Essential Job Functions

  • Determines the correct train moves required to access the proper tracks, and to access different areas of the rail yard.
  • Performs general railcar duties including spotting, coupling railcars, and preparation for railcar loading/unloading and pick-up.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the railcar air brake systems in detail, along with train dynamics such as slack control and train handling techniques required to move trains safety and efficiently throughout the yard.
  • Immediately informs management and/or the Safety Department of performance problems with railway switches or other railcar and railway hardware.
  • Uses appropriate radio and hand signals, as well as emergency signals to advise when train movement needs to be stopped.
  • Consistently wears required personnel protective equipment, and adheres to safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs inspection and maintenance of locomotives and trucks in accordance with federal, state and company regulations.
  • Cleans and repairs the belt loading system
  • Maintains and cleans the tracks, as needed.



  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • A minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience.
  • Successful completion of the Brakeman's Training Course.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state regulations related to inspection and maintenance.
  • An understanding of the train air brake systems, along with train dynamics such as slack control, and train handling techniques
  • Proficiency in the use of radio and hand signals for movement of trains, and also emergency signals to advise that train movements need to stop
  • Basic computer skills, with working knowledge of PC applications (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Internet, etc).
