Roadway Drainage Engineer - SoCal

GHD is seeking an experienced Drainage Engineer for our Transportation Group based in California.  You will be part of a team leading the next generation of drainage design, modeling software and workflows within our technical community. The general responsibilities anticipated for this role, include analytical techniques in hydrology and hydraulics, roadway drainage conveyance designs, and plan and specification production.

Specific duties will include, but not be limited to, performing complex drainage engineering studies, developing innovative stormwater solutions, preparing drainage reports, creating drainage facility construction details and assembling drainage construction plans and specifications consistent with Caltrans guidelines and standards and/or applicable agency guidelines.  This individual will also be responsible for organizing and planning project schedules and activities required for drainage design and delivery for trail, bridge, site-civil, and other related drainage infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:

•     Develops and/or supervises the creation of engineering services and products that meet customer quality requirements. This includes defining the problem, establishing the work scope, preparing the budget and project schedule, planning all supplemental work activities, providing technical direction, and reporting the work status.

•     Typical products may include detailed design calculations and modelling, construction drawings, procurement documents, design and specification packages, proposal evaluations and technical reports.

•     Provides guidance and justification for supplemental engineering activities, as required to evaluate the site-specific project conditions.  Supervise one or more subordinates and provide input regarding performance.

•     May be assigned to a project or organizational team, or as a lead engineer for a specific discipline (ie drainage) on a wide range of project sizes and complexities.

•     Provides input and technical guidance to CAD Designer/Drafters, Designers, Engineers and other personnel working on the same or related projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

•     BS or MS degree in Civil Engineering, or related.

•     PE license in California is strongly preferred

•     5 – 10 years of related work experience with roadway and/or site development drainage design.

•     Experience on Caltrans projects and or projects utilizing Caltrans standards is desirable.

•     Experience in alternate delivery projects on highway, roads, and bridges projects a plus.

Strong proficiency in utilizing engineering software packages for hydraulic modeling.  Examples of widely used drainage software is as follows: HEC-RAS (2D and/or 3D), HEC-HMS, LA County HydroCalc, Bentley OpenFlows Drainage suite, NRCS WinTR-55, FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox, EPA’s Storm Water Management Model (SWMM and variants of it), and ESRI ArcGIS.

Proficiency in CAD/BIM/GIS software packages, specifically Autodesk: AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Civil Site Design, and/or Bentley: MicroStation, OpenRoads; cross-platform adaptablity a plus.

Proficiency at navigating Windows folder and file structures, digital collaboration (e.g., MS Teams, Zoom), and use of industry standard software such as Excel and Word.
