Job Summary

Coordinate development of educational materials, with input from Nutrition Education Program ( NEP ) and horticulture faculty and staff, that address needs of low-literacy audiences in growing and preparing their own food.  Specific activities may include coordination in writing factsheets and other publications, developing related social media posts, developing and demonstrating educational projects that can be implemented by county extension agents and county volunteers, and ensuring impact measures are collected. 40% of time on yearly basis.

Assist horticulture faculty in updating an Alabama Cooperative Extension GROW App with information specific for Kentucky gardens. Specific activities may include transferring information from existing publications to electronic spread sheets, ensuring existing crop photos are accurate for Kentucky and uploading new photos if necessary, ensuring the information is at an appropriate reading level for low-literacy audiences, developing social media posts and other advertising for rolling out the program to Kentucky audiences, and routing gardening questions generated by the App to appropriate specialists or county agents. 40% of time on yearly basis.

Assist horticulture faculty in the management of the Kentucky Extension Master Gardener ( KEMG ) program.  Specific activities may include managing orders and inventory of the KEMG Training Manual, uploading training resources to SharePoint, minor editing of training videos, and managing the KEMG Facebook page by ensuring regular posts and responses to requests for information.20% of time on yearly basis.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Able to work in a team

Able to create and edit MS Word and spread-sheet documents

Able to summarize data from research documents into draft fact sheets or social media post suitable for low-literacy audiences

Able to design and demonstrate projects aimed at encouraging low-literacy audiences to grow and consume nutritious food

Preferred Education/Experience

Degree/course work in horticulture or related field (plant science, biology, pest management)
