Position overview:

Systems Analysts (Robotic Control Engineers) at Intuitive Surgical perform a central role in the design, development, and support of new products in the daVinci Surgery product line. Systems Analysts are primarily responsible for the robotic manipulator control algorithms, tele-robotic motion fidelity and safety algorithms for new surgical robots and instruments.  This responsibility crosses into electrical, mechanical, software, control, user interface and safety engineering where all the subsystems are integrated together.

Roles and Responsibilities:

A Systems Analyst in this product development role will provide early design input, quickly prove out new designs, and seek out solutions to subtle and challenging problems in complex electromechanical systems.  The successful candidate will design and implement new software features for manipulators and instruments such as gravity compensation of a mechanism, coordinated motion of robot manipulator, or control of a robotic instrument to accurately form surgical staples. This involves working with a high capacity interdisciplinary team that iterates quickly. The Systems Analyst’s contributions will start in the early design phase of products and continue until the products are shipping to customers with the highest quality and reliability.

Key responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the design of new surgical platforms through analysis and characterization of early prototypes.
  • Facilitate mechanical, hardware, and software integration of new products.
  • Participate in clinical observations and experiments to identify requirements and evaluate surgical performance
  • Analyze complex electromechanical devices for dynamic safety and clinical risk
  • Implement motion control and create safety monitoring algorithms based on sound physics
  • Document and pursue intellectual property
  • Improve group work-flow through tool building and teaching others
  • Support and track system performance as it moves from design to manufacturing.

Skill/Job Requirements:

  • Minimum Education: Masters in EE or ME with minimum 2 years of experience in control of mechatronic systems or PhD in related field.
  • Demonstrate intuitive understanding of mechanical phenomena with ability to do rigorous modeling and analysis.
  • Experience in hardware and software integration of complex electromechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of serial-arm robot kinematics and feedback control systems.
  • C/C++ and Matlab programming skills. Knowledge of Python is a plus.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Ability to collaborate across disciplines and work independently when necessary
