Primary Function of Position:

Contribute broadly to the Product Development team, responsible for machine learning, advanced analytics, and new technology development focused on surgical workflow and performance for next generation robotic surgery platforms.

The successful candidate must excel in a high-energy, focused, small-team environment, be able to initiate and drive new research and development directions. A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required.

As part of the Product Development team, immediate responsibilities include:

  • Maintain and drive continuous improvement in team processes and best practices in machine learning, data science, and engineering with a focus on spatiotemporal analysis in surgery
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and mentorship for direct and extended team members
  • Work with data and machine learning scientists, engineers, and key stakeholders to develop novel digital products to improve surgeon and team performance and efficiency on robotic surgery platforms.
  • Support clinical and academic collaborations in related fields

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to multiple areas of research, including but not limited to the following:
    • Characterizing surgeon and team behavior and workflow to optimize new technologies
    • Fully integrating advanced analytics into core digital products and intelligent systems
    • Conducting user studies to evaluate digital product concepts
  • Build and retain a collaborative team of experts in surgical data science and machine learning
  • Publish and present research at international conferences and top academic journals

Skill/Job Requirements:

Competency Requirements: (Competency is based on: education, training, skills and experience).

In order to adequately perform the responsibilities of this position the individual must have:

  • Minimum Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or related field with minimum (2) years academic/industry experience, or Master's degree with minimum (5) years industry experience, developing statistical models, algorithms, and/or machine learning applications
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Experience managing or mentoring in highly performing research and development teams
  • Hands-on experience and strong knowledge of computer vision, deep learning, and/or machine learning algorithms and techniques
  • Proficiency with Python and/or R
  • Experience with cloud compute environments such as GCP or AWS
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (10%)
