Cargo Specialist (Hazardous Goods)

Position Summary:

This position sits in legal services within the CMA CGM. The individual in this role will serve as a liaison between customers, CMA North American entities, terminals, and railroads regarding dangerous goods bookings as well as for CMA Central, South American, and Caribbean agencies. Ensures documents comply with regulatory requirements and reviews booking applications entered into the dangerous cargo approval system by CMA CGM agents or the Dangerous Cargo Office in the Shared Service Center in Mumbai, India. Approves or rejects bookings for transport based on international and national regulations, CMA CGM policies, vessel operator and port policies. Responds to customers with approval or reason for non-approval. Provides a booking confirmation to customers. Pre-advises port terminals of approvals as applicable for container in-gating. Collects final dangerous goods declarations and details for accuracy and compliance per voyage and makes them available to Port Operations and Group ship Managers by vessel (cut-off day and time).

This position will be responsible to:

  • Approve or refuse dangerous goods bookings in the online system per local and international regulations, ports and vessel operator restrictions, and CMA Group and vessel partners policies.
  • Collect final dangerous goods declarations and associated documents such as but not limited to Safety Data Sheet (SDS, tank certificates, and exemption letters from customers. Review and check for accuracy against information in online booking system and for regulatory compliance. Work with customers as needed for any documents changes and or discrepancies. Submit customer's final dangerous goods declaration to terminals as required for pre-advice.
  • Assist CMA CGM agents and Shares Service Center on the correct format of dangerous goods declarations and the correct procedure for entry of dangerous goods details into CMA internal systems.
  • Provide dangerous goods acceptance load list for each vessel port calls to Head Office ship managers and local marine operation personnel
  • Review and respond to sales inquiries with acceptance or refusal for all ocean transportation legs of a voyage routing, as applicable.
  • Assist customers with Dangerous Goods related questions or issues as they arise. Assist with alternate routing solutions in cases where original routing is not feasible.
  • Send booking confirmations to customers upon approval of Dangerous Goods bookings.
  • Confirm and validate final dangerous goods declaration against internal systems for accuracy and compliance
  • Miscellaneous related duties or projects as assigned.

Skill Sets / Education & Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma required.
  • 1-3 years of work experience.
  • Good written and verbal communications with internal and external customers.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Ability to make independent and fast pace decisions.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Must be available to work 11:00 am - 8:00 pm, Monday thru Friday.

Skill Sets / Education & Experience Preferred:

  • Associate's Degree preferred.
  • Previous dangerous goods experience (i.e. Shipper, warehouse, trucker) preferred
  • General knowledge of dangerous goods regulatory requirements, such as 49CFR, IMDG or IATA.
  • General knowledge of International shipping logistics and transportation.
