Welder Apprentice

Plasser American Corporation will have be adding to our Apprenticeship Program with our second year of apprentices.

The apprenticeship program will cover all tuition and book costs at Tidewater Community College where the apprentice will receive a certificate in their
field of study, a Journeyman's License and will be eligible to continue with their education to a Bachelors Degree if they would like to. Each apprenticeship program will last 4 years (8,000 hours).

Basic requirements:

  • All personnel in this group shall be graduates of high school or GED equivalence
  • Basic knowledge of math
  • Able to frequently stand; walk; use hand-tools
  • Strong mechanical aptitude

I Oxy-Fuel Welding

A. set-up, adjust, and regulate tanks, hoses and torches

B. tack, fillet, and groove weld in the flat position

C. perform maintenance on oxy-fuel welding equipment

II Oxy-Fuel Cutting

A. set-up, adjust, and regulate tanks, hoses and torch

B. perform manual straight cutting

C. perform manual bevel cutting

III Oxy-Fuel Brazing

A. set-up, adjust, and regulate tanks, hoses and torch

B. silver braze pipe joints

C. perform maintenance on oxy-fuel brazing equipment

IV Shielded Metal Arc Welding (S.M.A.W.)

A. set-up, operate, and maintain S.M.A.W. equipment

B. identify electrode

C. fillet weld plate in designated positions

D. groove weld plate in designated positions

E. weld pipe in the vertical and horizontal positions

F. cut and gouge using carbon arc-air method

V Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (G.T.A.W.)

A. set-up, operate, and maintain G.T.A.W. equipment

B. identify welding wire

C. fillet weld plate in designated positions

D. groove weld plate in designated positions

E. weld pipe in the vertical and horizontal positions

VI Gas Metal Arc Welding (G.M.A.W.) Semi Automatic

A. set-up, operate, and maintain G.M.A.W. equipment

B. identify electrode

C. fillet weld plate in designated positions

D. groove weld plate in designated positions

E. Weld pipe in the designated positions

VII Tools and Equipment

A. operate grinders, debur stock, rough removal of material

B. use and care for hand tools; wrenches, hammers, punches, pliers, etc.

C. use and care for measuring devices; tape measures, rules, scales, calip, dividers, etc.

D. use and care for precision instruments; micrometers, verniers, fixed gauges, etc.

VIII Fabrication and Assembly

A. layout stock from blueprints, sketches, and templates

B. drill, ream, countersink, counterbore, spot face, and tap holes using portable equipment

C. chip and grind material using hand held tools

D. set-up and target piping assemblies
