Electron Microscopist - R&D Associate

We are seeking a research staff member who will focus on the applications of monochromated and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) toward understanding the behavior of quantum materials. This position resides in the Materials MicroAnalysis Group , Nanomaterials Characterization Section in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  


As part of our research team, you will be responsible for advancing novel electron microscopy techniques including 4D STEM and ultrahigh-energy resolution EELS. You will conduct experiments using STEM to image a broad range of materials at atomic resolution and analyze, interpret results from STEM-based techniques such as EELS, and further the physics of quantum materials and electron microscopy. The materials and systems enabling this research are being developed across multiple research groups in the Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD). The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with these research groups, the theory effort in the PSD, and broad computational and machine learning efforts in the Computing and Computational Sciences directorate at ORNL. Of special interest is the incorporation of automated experiments and computer control/machine learning into the STEM workflow.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct materials research using aberration-corrected STEM and EELS
  • Advance 4D-STEM and related data analysis methods
  • STEM imaging and spectroscopy at low temperatures
  • Integrate multi-dimensional data with in situ analysis
  • Collaborate with project team members within and external to ORNL
  • Be responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Working safely and in compliance with all environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ethical values and behavior


Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D in materials science or condensed matter physics and demonstrated post-doctoral experience in a relevant field
  • Hands-on experience with aberration-corrected STEM / EELS
  • Programming and data analysis skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent publication record in electron microscopy
  • Demonstration of advanced Python/C++ programming skills
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
