Sr. R&D Staff Disruptive Technologies

The Field Intelligence Operations Division (FIOD) at Oak Ridge National Lab seeks applicants with experience and technical knowledge in researching vulnerabilities and threats to current and future disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, additive manufacturing, quantum computing, edge computing, spatial computing, etc.  The applicant will report to the FIOD Director and be responsible for analyzing unclassified and classified information, producing both unclassified and classified written products, proposing research and development projects identify and mitigate threats to disruptive technologies, coordinating and collaborating efforts with other Oak Ridge National Laboratory Divisions, and briefing material to peers, management, and sponsors.

 

 

Major Job Duties and Responsibilities

The applicant will be responsible for providing technical expertise with the following major duties and responsibilities:

  • Perform multi-disciplined unclassified and classified analysis to identify threats and vulnerabilities to disruptive technologies in order to identify research and development efforts that could validate and develop mitigations to those threats
  • Serve as a catalyst to identify opportunities for collaborative research and development between Oak Ridge National Laboratory open research programs and national security programs
  • Generate analytical assessments on threats and vulnerabilities that can be shared with peers, management, and sponsors
  • Responsible for producing peer-reviewed papers and briefings of both unclassified and classified analytical assessments regarding threats, vulnerabilities and mitigations
  • Present both unclassified and classified briefings regarding analytical assessments and research and development programs
  • Interact and collaborate with agencies and members of the national security community
  • Abide by all environmental, safety, health and quality requirements and implement practices per ORNL’s Standards-based Management System (SBMS).
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation of the Directorate’s values and ethics
  • Occasional domestic travel

  

 

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Engineering or other relevant technical discipline with 15+ years of experience, or M.S. in Engineering or other relevant technical discipline with 12+ years of experience, or a PhD in Engineering or other relevant technical discipline with 6+ years of experience
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to acquire new knowledge and learn new skills is essential 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are essential
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with team members
  • Ability to interact with sponsors and officials from other government agencies
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.  In addition, due the SCI, you may be also be subject to random polygraph testing.

 

 

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DoD) or other government agencies is highly desirable.
