Sr. R&D Staff Member, High Power Electric Drive Systems

The Electric Drives Research (EDR) Group at ORNL is seeking an internationally recognized full-time power electronics researcher to conduct research, contribute in developing new research areas, and lead projects in the areas of high voltage electric drives and automotive power electronics systems. The required areas of expertise include high-power and high-voltage power electronic systems including traction inverters, integrated drive technologies, and power electronics for electrified vehicles.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and lead pioneering research in the field of power electronics related to electric drive and automotive power electronics technologies.
  • Develop and expand existing light-duty electric vehicles related research portfolio to encompass medium- and heavy-duty vehicle electrification by writing and submitting strong research proposals.
  • Initiate R&D to accelerate electrification of transportation systems beyond road vehicles such as marine or aerospace systems.  
  • Develop advanced power system and coordinated control architectures for transportation systems based on high performance power electronics.
  • Develop multidisciplinary research leveraging ORNL capabilities and core strengths towards solving critical challenges associated with electric drives and propulsion as applied to transportation sector.
  • Network and develop collaborative R&D with other organizations including original equipment manufacturers, universities, automotive suppliers, and other relevant research laboratories.
  • Proficiency in design, analysis, laboratory characterization and validation of automotive power electronics systems related to high-power electric drives.
  • Present and report research results in high-impact peer reviewed journals, conferences, and project reviews.
  • Mentor postdoctoral researchers, students, and interns.


Qualifications Required:

  • Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering with a focus on power electronics or high-voltage/high-frequency power semiconductor devices and components, and at least 5 years of associated work experience.
  • Demonstrated capability of conducting and disseminating original and impactful research, leading, and managing R&D projects.
  • A strong commitment to promoting positive work environment and scientific integrity.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for presentations, reports, proposals, and publications.
  • Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Prior work experience with industry or other national laboratories.
  • A strong commitment and understanding of electrical work safety.
  • Some travel will be required for this position. No clearance level required.
