General Dynamics NASSCO-Norfolk is the consolidation of two great shipyards that have operated in the Port of Hampton Roads, Virginia for more than 50 years - the former Metro Machine Corporation and the former Earl Industries.  Along with our facilities in Bremerton, Washington, our expertise encompasses experience on more than 450 ships, a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA) contract, and the maintenance and repair of aircraft carriers and ships from the Navy's amphibious fleet.

  1. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE
    This position exists to assist in the management of the Company’s Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Programs; taking appropriate measures to minimize or eliminate potential EHS risks; and ensures full compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The candidate reports directly to the EHS Director and functions as a technical expert on environmental, health and safety matters, advising the EHS Director and/or Senior Management and representing the Company before numerous EHS agencies. They will oversee the development of EHS special programs and projects, ensure the Company’s EHS Management System (EHSMS) requirements are maintained and new initiatives implemented in accordance with OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 requirements.  They will maintain Company requirements to ensure compliance, protection of employees, risk mitigation and continual improvement.
     
    POSITION DEMANDS (EDUCATION/TRAINING
    1. This position typically requires extensive knowledge of the principles and techniques of EHS gained through:
      1. A Bachelor’s of Science Degree and a minimum of ten years related experience.
      2. A Master’s Degree in a related field and five years of experience.
    2. An advanced degree or continuing education certificates in EHS or a related technical discipline is highly desirable.
       
  2. POSITION DEMANDS (REQUIRED EXPERIENCE)
  1. Must be computer literate with advanced knowledge of Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point, and various internet tools. 
  2. Excellent written, verbal communication and people skills are mandatory.
  3. Must have experience in the development and implementation of Management Systems. 
  4. Extensive knowledge of ship repair or other manufacturing operations, facilities, processes and operating procedures to understand the impact that Federal, State and Local regulations have is beneficial.
  5. The ability to effectively interface with and make presentations before Company and regulatory bodies at the local, state, and federal levels, as well as all levels of company and corporate management is required. 
  6. The position demands a sense of responsibility and attention to detail of the highest degree.
  7. While performing the duties of the position, they candidate must be able to walk to all yard locations and occasionally aboard vessels as part of daily inspections and to attend meetings.
  8. Must have working knowledge of OSHA 1910, 1915 and 1926, DOT and applicable EPA related regulations.
  9. Able to process reports and maintain records using electronic media.
  10. Must be able to gain access to government facilities and have a current driver’s license.
  11. Position may require attendance at various training courses.

IV.  WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
 

  1. The EHS Manager reports to and is responsible to the EHS Director and has oversight responsibility in the review of EHS regulations and notification of the possible impact on the Company.
  2. EHS Manager has direct management responsibility for the health and safety employees in the EHS Department.
  3. Position requires extensive contact with all levels within and external to the Company as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks and fulfill essential function of the Departments.
