Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

Internship with the Corning Optical Connectivity Solutions Division Engineering organization supporting project work through automation. The intern will gain experience in automation design and core processes related to fiber optics.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Design and building controls systems for simple proof-of-concept testbeds
  • Program existing control systems for prototype automation systems
  • Optimizing sequences that perform process steps
  • Implement and improve motion controls
  • Implement and improve machine vision
  • Data manipulation, analysis, graphing, etc.
  • Experimental planning, execution, & analysis
  • Author technical report outlining discoveries
  • Participation in overall problem-solving efforts; Activities include things like devising new measurement techniques, or investigating potential equipment and process issues


Hours of work/work schedule/flextime:

  • Basic work hours are 40hrs/week; 8am-5pm


Education and Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in an electrical, electromechanical or computer engineering program or in a mechanical engineering program with coursework covering circuits and PLC/computer programming.
  • At least 2 years of related coursework in the engineering curriculum


Required Skills:

  • Knowledge of basic circuits: logic gates, DC circuits, basic electromagnetics & motors
  • Ability to program at least one object-orient language such as Java, C#, C++
  • Knowledge of network setup
  • Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to build relationships and interact with all levels of the organization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively present information
  • Results-oriented
  • High initiative, able to work independently, and in a team environment
