About the Indiana Veterans’ Home

The Indiana Veterans’ Home, located in West Lafayette, Indiana, is the only long term care facility in Indiana dedicated to serving veterans and their spouses.  We provide a beautiful, healthy and home-like environment for veterans and their spouses to live. About the Job:

As a Qualified Medication Aide with the Indiana Veterans' Home, you will perform a variety of non-professional routine tasks associated with the care, treatment, health and welfare of patients and residents.  This includes all aspects of basic nursing care, within the scope of the Certified Nurse Aide training rules; and administers medications and treatments (within the scope of the QMA rules) with moderate supervision.  You will report to the unit manager, but also take directives from the charge nurse (either RN or LPN) on the unit.   MUST HAVE QMA CERTIFICATE TO APPLY.

A Day in the Life:
  • Basic knowledge of nursing care, hospital routine and basic nursing practices;
  • Trains and assists patients with daily living tasks; helps patients dress, eat, bathe, brush teeth and comb hair;
  • Escorts patients to and from dining room, other areas of the hospital for treatment and tests, medical facilities outside hospital and/or on fields trips;
  • Obtains drugs from pharmacy;
  • Administers and charts medicine under the direction of a nurse;
  • Checks and records patients' vital signs;
  • Operates medical equipment: thermometer, stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, oxygen, suction, etc.;
  • Performs basic first-aid in case of patient injury such as applying antiseptic, bandages, etc.;
  • All other duties as assigned
What We're Looking For:
  • Two (2) years of work experience or high school diploma/GED plus the successful completion of the Qualified Medications Aide (QMA) course as approved by the Indiana State Department of Health.
    What You'll Need For Success:
    • Working knowledge of nursing care, hospital routine and basic nursing procedures;
    • Working knowledge of, and ability to apply, basic first-aid and CPR techniques;
    • Ability to apply basic knowledge of nursing practices to ensure comfort and well-being of patients;
    • Ability to follow standard procedures in administration of medications;
    • Ability to keep records, reports and charts of residents accurately; Bowel Movement sheets, restraint sheets, intake and output, temperature, pulse and respiration, blood pressure, Nursing Notes, weights, etc.;
    • Ability to use medical equipment; stethoscope, sphygmomanometer, vaporizer, etc.;
    • Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships with residents;
    • Ability to note subtle changes in residents' physical status and mental behavior;
    • Ability to control intoxicated, confused, senile or difficult patients;
    • Ability to establish and maintain safe and healthy environment for residents;
    • Ability to perform a variety of housekeeping duties to ensure the comfort and well-being of residents;
    • Ability to act in emergency situations; fire, tornado alert, adverse behavior of patients, etc.;
    • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.

    If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
