Group 23--Summer Research Program Intern

The Biological & Chemical Technologies Group addresses the most impactful and challenging current and emerging national security challenges using advanced biological and chemical technologies for sponsors across the United States government. Capabilities within the Group include analytical chemistry; organic chemistry; molecular, cellular, and synthetic biology; microbiome engineering; rapid DNA sequencing; bioinformatics; mass spectrometry; laser spectroscopy; microfluidics; and rapid prototyping. These capabilities are applied to missions spanning chemical, biological, and explosives (CBE) detection and attribution; medical diagnostics and countermeasures; pathogen identification; point-of-care diagnostics; molecular intelligence; biosecurity; and DNA forensics.

Job Description


The Biological & Chemical Technologies Group works on a wide range of topics. Candidate will participate in projects to analyze different data sets (physiological, chemical, genomic, epigenetic, multi-omic) to improve correlations between signatures and phenotypic characteristics of interest, to support pathogen characterization, or to direct assessment of medical countermeasure candidates. Application areas include human ID and characterization, characterization of cell-based sensors, and pandemic response.  The candidate will work closely with experts in synthetic biology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, AI/ML, and data science.

Pursuing a Bachelors or Masters in bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics, or related field is required.  Strong data analysis and algorithm implementation skills are strongly preferred. Experience analyzing biologically-derived data sets also strongly preferred. Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and graphical) are highly desired.


Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
