Laboratory Animal Medical Services (LAMS) department in the Office of Research at the University of Cincinnati, is seeking a Veterinary Technician team member to provide veterinary care for a variety of laboratory animal species; provide research support and technical services; perform treatments and technical procedures; assist with surgical procedures and provide pre- and post-operative care.



  • Perform appropriate housing, handling, and restraint techniques.
  • Assess health and well-being of all species.
  • Perform routine injections, sampling, and identification techniques.
  • Perform basic laboratory diagnostic testing; prepare specimens for analysis.
  • Prepare animals for aseptic surgery; maintain surgical inventory.
  • Perform euthanasia according to the AVMA guidelines.
  • Perform routine equipment cleaning and maintenance.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation.
  • Train LAMS staff and research personnel.
  • Report animal and personnel issues and concerns to the appropriate level.
  • Assist with development and implementation of SOP's and Quality Assurance Standards.
  • May assist a veterinarian during surgery.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:   Associate's degree in Applied Science OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. On-call rotation is a requirement for this position.


UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Subject to animal bites and diseases; exposure to animal waste, urine, feces, blood, dander (allergens), and odors; exposure to dust, hot water and steam.



Registered veterinary technician certification; American Association of Laboratory Animal Science certification; Experience working with rodents; Experience working in a research setting; Experience administering and monitoring anesthesia in a variety of species; Experience working in a surgical setting with a variety of species and surgical procedures; Experience with surgical instruments/pack preparation; Experience with drug calculation and dosages.

This position will be a professional position paid at an hourly rate.
