We are seeking a potdoctoral researcher in Experimental Optics who will focus on/research in the field of semiconductor diode lasers and diode laser arrays.  This position resides in the Complex Systems Group in the Computational Science and Engineering Division, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

As part of our team you will have the opportunity to design, build and perform experiments to study (a) phase and wavelength/frequency locking from multiple diode laser sources to achieve high power and high intensity beams emitted from high power laser diode sources; (b) effects of current modulation on phase and frequency locking of multiple combined diode laser sources, and (c) actually building laser source utilizing multiple diode lasers.   In addition, you will also write peer-reviewed papers and technical reports for internal and external release and represent the organization by giving technical presentations in large public forums.


As part of the ORNL postdoc program you will also have the opportunity to explore additional research topics that align with your interests, in conjunction with your postdoc advisor.


Opportunities may be available for a full-time R&D staff position, at the end of the postdoc appointment based on performance and funding availability.


Basic Qualifications:


  • PhD in the fields of Optics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or a field related to the job duties of this position.
  • Proven experience with lasers and optics and, in particular, with semiconductor diode lasers.


Special Requirement:

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license, which requires U.S. Citizenship or LPR (Lawful Permanent Residence)

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative team interactions across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.


Additional Information:

Applicants cannot have received their PhD more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
