Purpose

 

The Enrichment Technology Group within the Isotope and Fuel Cycle Technology Division (IFCTD) seeks applications for a mechanical systems designer position with emphasis in mechanical CAD design related to routing and installation of piping systems. Individual to work at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to provide mechanical engineering CAD models, assemblies, and mechanical drawings in support of design, fabrication, assembly, and testing activities supporting multiple enrichment technology programs. The IFCTD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is a leader in research, development, and deployment of technology for the production and purification of radioisotopes, enhancement of nuclear nonproliferation and safeguards, reduction of threats to nuclear material at risk, and expansion of the national capabilities in radiation detection and nuclear forensics.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities

 

The selected candidate will be responsible for mechanical CAD design supporting the infrastructure and system installation of enrichment devices. The mechanical designer will also help technicians and engineers procure, assemble, maintain, and perform tests on system installations in a variety of R&D settings. They must possess a strong troubleshooting skill set to the component level as jobs and tasks vary greatly based on issues and need. The selected candidate will perform field walk-downs to verify facility interfaces and create redlines for post installation as-constructed drawing revisions. This position’s responsibility will include:

 

  • Create part and assembly models in SolidWorks to support the 3D routing of process and utility systems
  • Generate detailed mechanical drawings to facilitate fabrication and installation of equipment
  • Work with Process Engineers to prepare P&IDs according to system design requirements
  • Produce building models of existing infrastructure to define equipment interfaces and design boundaries
  • Establish and maintain piping component libraries for multiple pipe class services
  • Aid in the development of piping specifications and datasheets  
  • Work in a Product Data Management (PDM) system to maintain configuration control of design files

 

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications:

  • A.S. in Engineering or other Technical area
  • Minimum of 7 years related experience in piping/system design
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in 3D routed system design
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Q clearance
  • SolidWorks CAD experience

 

This position is a full-time staff position.
