Description

The Project Accountant SME provides subject matter expertise across Project Accounting and project financial controls, supporting the design, implementation and optimisation of Northern Powergrid's Finance transformation programme.

The role acts as the primary Finance representative for project accounting processes, ensuring that regulatory, financial, operational and reporting requirements are accurately reflected within system design, business processes and controls. Working closely with Finance, IT, external implementation partners and other Finance SMEs, the role will ensure seamless integration between Projects, Procurement, Accounts Payable, Fixed Assets, General Ledger, Regulatory Reporting and Group Finance processes.

The SME will support the implementation of Oracle Fusion Projects and associated Finance modules, ensuring project cost capture, capital expenditure accounting, and reporting requirements are effectively designed and controlled along with the appropriate integrations from PM platforms such as IDMS and QPID.

The role is empowered to make day-to-day programme decisions relating to project accounting processes, system design, testing outcomes and financial controls within agreed governance frameworks, escalating only where strategic or cross-functional decisions are required.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Act as the programme Subject Matter Expert for Project Accounting and Capital Investment processes.
  • Define, document and validate project accounting business requirements and future-state operating processes.
  • Represent Project Accounting requirements in design workshops and solution walkthroughs.
  • Make functional decisions relating to project structures, cost collection, and project controls.
  • Collaborate with SMEs across AP, Procurement, Fixed Assets, General Ledger, Treasury, Reporting and Regulatory workstreams to deliver integrated end-to-end processes.
  • Review and approve functional designs, test scenarios, defect resolutions and process documentation.
  • Support configuration and implementation of Oracle Fusion Projects and associated integrations.
  • Define and validate project hierarchies, expenditure types, cost classifications and accounting treatments.
  • Ensure project costs are accurately captured, accounted and reported.
  • Support data migration, reconciliation and validation activities for project and asset-related data.
  • Lead Project Accounting testing activities including SIT and UAT.
  • Support month-end, regulatory reporting and year-end accounting activities relating to capital programmes and investments.
  • Ensure project accounting controls comply with internal governance, audit requirements and accounting standards.
  • Support training, business readiness and knowledge transfer activities.
  • Identify opportunities for automation, simplification and continuous improvement across project accounting processes.

Experience and Knowledge

  • Significant experience in Project Accounting
  • Strong understanding of project lifecycle accounting from project initiation through to capitalisation and asset creation.
  • Experience participating in Finance transformation, ERP implementation or process redesign programmes.
  • Strong understanding of accounting controls, governance and audit requirements relating to capital expenditure.
  • Proven ability to represent business requirements and challenge solution designs where necessary.
