Highway Construction Engineer - Chicago Job

The Chicago/Schaumburg, IL offices seeks an Entry Civil Engineer to join our growing office of highway construction engineers as an entry level engineer.  This position would be within one of the office’s construction division, and duties may include Construction inspection, project documentation, quantity calculations, conflict resolution, report writing, specification reviews, preparing cost estimates, and other related tasks. Microstation, Geopak, and MS Office and other design software may be used, and all work will be in collaboration with other engineers, technicians, planners, and surveyors.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited program
  • Ability to obtain Fundamentals of Engineering registration within 1 year


Preferred Qualifications:

  • May 2019 graduate
  • EIT
  • Previous internship experience in construction inspection
  • Experience with Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, Illinois DOT, Chicago DOT, local municipalities, Metra, Class I railroads, or on other Federally-funded projects
  • Geopak and/or Microstation working knowledge
  • Local candidates
  • No relocation or stipend assistance

General Duties & Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Analyzes information and data to perform routine design tasks.
  2. Receives instructions from Resident Engineer or Senior Inspectors as to the general results expected.
  3. Inspect work performed in the field in accordance with plans and specifications.
  4. Document field work performed, inspections and taking necessary action in the field.
  5. Responsible as a member of the design them for accuracy of engineering design and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.
  6. Researches plans, specification or municpal code requirements.
  7. Keeps Resident informed of any changes to the proposed work or scope or additional services, scheduling issues in field and any changes in project schedule.
  8. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  9. Assist or participate in preparation of business proposals.
  10. May be asked to participate in non-construction engineering activities such as plan reviews or assist in plan preparation as needed.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
