We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified naval architect to join our experienced Americas Technical Support Office (ATSO) team in Toronto. The role includes undertaking hull and statutory design appraisal for marine new construction projects in the Americas as well as providing technical support to designers in the region and the large local ship-owner client base.


Job Responsibilities

To perform design appraisal of hull and statutory plans for new buildings and modifications to existing vessels in accordance with LR’s Rules and applicable International statutory regulations.
To provide technical advice to LR field surveyors, designers and operators of ships and other marine systems on matters relating to engineering systems and related statutory certification.

To support the Technical Support Office management in the day to day running of the office.


Job Requirements

A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of marine engineering.  
Minimum of 5 years relevant experience either in a shipyard, marine consultancy or Classification Society.

Knowledge of the marine regulatory regime, including the classification process and IMO conventions/codes and Flag Administration regulations.
The technical support aspect of the role will include trouble shooting and finding acceptable resolutions in dispute situations, therefore the ability to listen, accommodate and persuade whilst maintaining technical compliance is essential.
Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
Ability to use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding in the application of existing and emerging technology.
Good technical and commercial management skills and knowledge, e.g. project management, process management.
To demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and initiative.
Proficiency in verbal and written English skills.
Well developed PC skills. Knowledge of specialised software (e.g. NAPA, Finite Element Analysis Package) is desirable but not essential.
Applications will be required to undergo pre-employment testing including medical assessment.
