Development Associate-Material Process

Scope of Position (i.e. projects involved with and role within group):

 

The Development Associate provides technical and project leadership for sheet process/product development projects. The main focus is developing advanced glass separation and process technologies such as laser processing and hybrid finishing for large size glass sheets. The associate is responsible for early stage technology development including concept generation, design of experiments, and experimental setup. In addition to the individual contributor role, the person may act as project manager leading new process development/integration/transfer with multiple cross-functional teams. You will also have special access to confidential and other highly sensitive information. In accepting this position, you will be required to sign a non-compete agreement that extends for two (2) years after termination of your employment.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

•Provide technical leadership and build creative processes to improve glass edge quality and process throughput;

•Design laser process experiments, set up high power laser systems and performs process development;

•Invent new separation processes and demonstrate consistent performance suited for high throughput production;

•Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for advanced glass separation processes such as laser cutting, finishing, and hybrid processes;

•Identify continuous improvement opportunities and implement new approaches to improve the processes;

•Deliver oral and written reports/presentations, both to project teams and to broad audiences within R&D

•Coordinate the process development with R and E organizations from concept through technology transfer.

 

Travel Requirements (please note if international):

•Domestic and international travel up to 25%, and up to a few weeks duration each time.

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

•Normal hours 8:00 AM-5:00 PM; may have frequent teleconferences after hours.

 

Education and Experience (minimum required for consideration):

•Ph.D. degree in Physics, Material Science, or Electrical Engineering with 5+ years related experience; Or Master’s degree with at least ten years of related experience is acceptable.

 

Required Skills (These are skills that candidates MUST possess)

•Hands-on experience with high power lasers and their applications in material processing;

•Strong background and extensive experience in brittle material processing and fundamental understanding of the processes;

•In-depth knowledge about advanced process monitoring technologies, such as contact free dynamic sheet shape measurement, thermal imaging, and other optical imaging techniques;

•At least 3 years industrial experience in glass processing using lasers and advanced tools/processes;

•Experience with material science and characterization tools, such as FTIR, XRR, XPS, AES, AFM, SIMS, SEM, EDX, RBS, UV-VIS and related spectroscopic techniques;

•Strong background with publications and innovations;

•Excellent written and oral interpersonal skills.

 

Desired Skills (These are skills that would be nice for candidates to possess)

•Experience with nonlinear optics, plasma physics, and physics associated with laser processing of transparent materials;

•Hands-on experience with modeling tools on laser processing and optical modeling;

•Ability to work effectively with teams with varied strengths and backgrounds;

•Familiar with statistical data analysis and design of experiment methodologies;

•Flexible and able to adjust your work schedule to accommodate business requirements
