Advanced Materials Characterization Lead Scientist

The Microelectronics Technology Department (MTD) at The Aerospace Corporation conducts basic and applied research in microelectronic and optoelectronic devices for space applications, and provides technical support to national security space programs in these areas. 


The MTD is looking for a member of the technical staff to support investigations of microelectronics reliability, advanced microelectronics technology nodes, capability development, and physics of failure in advanced CMOS, SiGe, SOI, III-V, II-VI, and other advanced materials, processes, devices for space applications. The staff member must have in-depth knowledge of materials characterization by atom probe tomography and transmission electron microscopy and strong background in materials science with emphasis on semiconductors and dielectrics. The staff member must exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills, have a strong publication record, and have a proven history of mentoring graduate students and junior staff.  The staff member must also have a desire to work in an environment requiring self-motivation and independence as well as project leadership and teamwork.


Key Functions

  • Conduct innovative basic and applied research in materials analysis and device engineering
  • Develop capabilities in device reverse engineering
  • Develop capabilities in failure analysis and fault identification
  • Present results internally and at scientific meetings and publish research in refereed journals
  • Provide technical support to national security space programs in these areas


This is a part-time, casual position.



  • PhD in electrical engineering, physics, computer engineering or material science with at least six years of microelectronics experience
  • Experience with materials science, IC devices and semiconductor physics
  • Experience with advanced characterization techniques such as transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain DoD Secret clearance
