Mars Wrigley Confectionary is looking for Principal Sensory Scientist, Science and Technology in Chicago, IL.  

 

The Mars Wrigley Confectionery (MWC) Sensory team translates consumer desires into desired confectionery experiences.

As a Principal Scientist, you will contribute to the growth of global Research & Development (R&D) capabilities and develop and implement sensory best practices that impact how technologies & processes are implemented in MWC labs and factories globally. You are passionately curious, have an appetite to advance sensory science through foundational & applied research, and are motivated to solve complex technical & functional challenges.

 

This role provides sensory technical leadership and scientific expertise to the MWC Science and Technology (S&T) Teams from ingredients (e.g. cocoa and mint) to finished products (e.g. gum and chocolate). May include model creation. S/he will need to leverage existing sensory tools (including consumer methods, when appropriate) and also develop specific methodologies in line with project objectives. Scope of works includes cost savings, efficiency, security of supply as well as “new to MWC” benefits. This role includes managing 1-3 contractors or associates. S/he will also be an active member of the Sensory Leadership Team (LT).

 

Key Responsibilities:

Delivery

Advanced level of delivery, autonomously.  Is a sensory science expert. Can apply previous sensory expertise into multiple product categories. Understands limits of panel and consumer testing. Can utilize both to meet project objective. May have advanced modeling skills.  Executes with excellence as technical leader on complex projects, providing technical expertise to influence project direction. S/he will need to build strong partnerships and be an integral member of project teams. Will work on global projects in multiple categories.

Business Strategy

Advanced skill level to influence key stakeholders.  Can understand how his/her work will meet business strategy and can effectively communicate this to a non-technical audience. Able to actively build the strategy and lead technical teams to generate ideas and/or approaches to initiatives.  Bringing a strong consumer and sensory lens to Science & Technology (S&T) research from the earliest points will have a large influence on the direction / focus of early research. Can influence science and technology strategy based on sensory expertise. Develops business cases from functional perspective

Technology/ Program development

Advanced skill level in building short-medium term sensory initiative pipeline against science and technology program objectives. Actively scouts new approaches to search for opportunities; develops his/her sensory expertise.

People & Technical Capability development

Advanced skill level in mentoring associates within sensory. This includes mentorship through business/project challenges, organizational challenges, and provides guidance on developing goals and measures.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Sensory Science or related field   
  • 10 years in sensory science at a CPG company
  • Demonstrated capability to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity/change
  • Ability to work with highly technical team, business partners & PhD’s in an upstream science team
  • Strong links with internal R&D community
  • Flexibility to conduct conference calls outside of core work hours
  • Ability to travel 25% of the time globally
  • Successful Completion of a drug and background screen

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD or advanced degree
  • 11+ years in sensory science at a CPG company
