External Communications Associate



Position Description


A promising opportunity exists for a junior-level communications professional to join New York Life at an exciting time for an industry leader. The individual would report to the Head of External Communications and support the full public relations team, which together covers the company’s insurance, annuities and asset management businesses, and corporate reputation matters, including executive visibility, public affairs support, M&A and other issues.



  • Supports media relations efforts by managing inbound media inquiries, surfacing new media contacts, conducting media outreach, researching editorial calendars and coordinating public relations agency relationships
  • Assists with content strategy and content creation, including organizing content ideas, interviewing executives for stories, developing briefs for the Content Strategy team, and helping to edit written, video and graphic content
  • Organizes logistics around media meetings, announcements and other events; develops media briefings and other related content
  • Drafts, proofreads and edits press releases, contributed articles, internal memos, presentations and other content created for communications
  • Helps the team organize and update communications related to special situations, including litigation, regulatory matters, M&A and other projects of that nature.
  • Supports team organization through the tracking of workflow and deliverables
  • Assists communications in handling issues management activities
  • Supports the team in gathering and interpreting metrics related to reputation and media coverage
  • Supports the team’s close collaboration with other Corporate Communications functions, and with the subject matter experts and marketing functions within New York Life’s business units

  • B.A. / B.S. degree
  • 2-3 years professional experience, preferably within a public relations agency, financial services company or asset management firm (institutional or retail)
