The Specialty Materials segment manufactures products that provide more than 150 material formulations for glass, glass ceramics and fluoride crystals to meet demand for unique customer needs. Consequently, this segment operates in a wide variety of commercial and industrial markets that include display optics and components, semiconductor optics components, aerospace and defense, astronomy, ophthalmic products, telecommunications components and cover glass that is optimized for portable display devices.

 

Purpose of Position

This purpose of this position is product line management for new innovation products.  Scope includes the articulation of the product definition and value proposition, pricing, placement (in tandem with sales) and promotional/ commercial launch plan (in tandem with marketing communications and branding).  In addition, will coordinate a cross-functional effort (in tandem at least with new product development and appropriate business leaders) to create the customer selling deck and quantify the value proposition. Will manage the product line at least through pre-Stage 5 innovation stages.

 

Major Responsibilities(Ongoing Tasks)

Developing and implementing product strategy in tandem with cross functional resources

  • Determine project objectives and articulate customer needs…i.e what is the problem to be solved or capability the customer desires
  • Articulate product attributes, specifications, basis of competition, product trajectory to ensure an advantaged product.  Requires leading efforts to synthesize and assess competitive technologies or offerings
  • Interpret market demand and provide key input/decision for capacity planning through forecasting and demand management process including customer prioritization of early stage capacity.
  • Develop deep understanding of the customers’ products systems and how they impact our products’ specs and value proposition.
  • Engage as needed in supply chain disruption issues to influence or make decisions on global order and Development/Manufacturing prioritization

 

Developing and implementing pricing strategy

  • Develop pricing strategy based on cost analysis, competitive analysis, value analysis/proposition and shareholder needs
  • Develop and implement pricing process for efficient and effective price management that meets all contractual requirements as defined with legal

 

Developing and implementing customer segmentation and strategy (with sales)

  • Work with sales to segment customer base, prioritize customer interaction at a product level
  • Attend customer meetings where the innovation product selling deck is presented and gather and address feedback. Identify new opportunities to further improve the innovation product performance
  • Work with legal and sales to define contractual and licensing terms and act as an approver of the supply agreement and licensing process
  • In tandem with development and applications engineering ensure the sales organization has the knowledge, training and supporting information to effectively deploy innovation product line strategy to achieve revenue and market share goals
  • Develop detailed Q+A/scripts for account managers and AEs

 

Develop and implement marketing communication plan (with marketing communications and branding)

  • Define and implement innovation product launch tools that lead to an enhanced Gorilla position
  • Working with marketing communications develop the plan for external communication – product collateral; tradeshows, conferences, press releases, public relations; web communications and social media as appropriate

 

Coordinate a cross functional team that articulates the value proposition; creates the customer selling deck

  • Lead the coordination of the key business and corporate stakeholders to develop the core value proposition to including clear articulation of the product value to customer ultimately expressed as savings in dollars, if possible.
  • Directly contribute to creation of the value prop content, product definition, and ‘elevator speech’
  • Create the customer selling deck that builds upon the value prop and the most effective way to communicate our product value. Will require multiple iterations internally and externally as the message evolves and is refined

 

Process

  • On a value added basis define and document processes to enable best practice consistency over time and across functional and geographic boundaries
  • Adhere to Product Line behavior, reinforce Corning's Values, ensure a positive work environment, and the protection of intellectual property
  • Act as the key coordinator between Account Management organizations and Commercial Technology, Operations, Development and Engineering

 

 

Job Specifications – Qualifications

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or materials science or equivalent
  • Desired: Master’s degree in business administration or equivalent

 

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in customer facing roles (Acct mgt; AE; or commercial technology) in a business approximately > $50M annual revenues
  • Product line management or market analysis or sales/AE customer facing experience in a business approximately > $50M annual revenues
  • Preference: manufacturing or innovation program experience; 3 + years of experience in high-tech, display related, OEM, materials or consumer electronics industry
