Nonwovens Customer / Product and Applications Development Engineer/Chemist

Job Role Summary

The Nonwovens Customer / Product & Applications Development Engineer / Chemist is responsible for the development and commercialization of new polyolefin resins, polyolefin-based elastomers and applications thereof for the Nonwoven market segment. The position supports all ExxonMobil Polymer Business Lines with emphasis on Polypropylene and Vistamaxx™ performance polymers.  Key interactions include business line Marketing and relevant Product Development organizations, Product Stewardship & Regulatory Affairs, Global Chemicals Research, Polymers Customer Development and selected commercial and academic development partners in order to understand market needs and develop corresponding solutions based on ExxonMobil performance polymer products.  The position will report to Global Polymers Technology organization as a member of the Global Nonwovens Technology team and will be located at the Baytown Technology and Engineering Complex in Baytown, TX.

Domestic travel with some limited amount of international travel will be expected to meet the position responsibilities. The Nonwovens Customer / Product & Applications Development Engineer / Chemist is expected to work in close concert with relevant ExxonMobil Manufacturing, Sales, and Marketing teams and with customer personnel. Therefore the candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, a willingness to work as a member of cross-functional teams in addition to technical skills related to nonwoven materials, converting technologies and, ideally polymer manufacturing.

Primary Job Functions

  • Initially the position will focus on conversion / application development for elastic nonwovens. The position will be responsible for, but not necessarily limited to the following activities:
  • Development and optimization of new applications and advanced converting technologies for ExxonMobil's polyolefin products for Nonwovens
  • Development and commercial implementation of globally desired polyolefin products for spunmelt processes; specifically focusing on spunbond and meltblown processes
  • Extension of commercial products, processes and applications across the nonwovens industry
  • Technical support of existing and future customers in the Nonwovens industry

Job Requirements

  • An advanced degree (PhD) is preferred in physical sciences or equivalent degree/work related experience
  • M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, or Polymer Science
  • Demonstrated work experience in either:
  1. Development of polymers for use in spunmelt nonwoven applications
  2. Operation or development of nonwovens converting processes
  3. Technical aspects of nonwoven applications development
  • Strong knowledge of Nonwoven market segments and related nonwoven fabric performance requirements, especially focusing on hygiene and medical applications
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multiple groups and participate on multi-functional teams
  • Ability to work within multi-cultural groups and willingness to travel internationally, in support of global business model
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and possess excellent administrative and organizational skills
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational skills complimented by a sense of ownership, initiative and adaptability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop effective relationships both internally and externally

Preferred Knowledge / Skills / Abilities / Objectives

  • Direct experience with polyolefins especially polypropylene and polyethylene
  • Experience related to state-of-the art spunmelt nonwovens conversion technologies
  • Experience with analytical / characterization methods
