Physician (Cardiologist)

    The Providence VA Medical Center is an acute care facility operating 24 hours a day 7 days a week. While most tours of duty are scheduled during the day, the possibility of "on-call" and working evenings, nights and weekends does exist. "On call" and shift changes, will be considered based on patient and facility needs. The part time staff physician participates in the monthly on-call schedule and includes, but is not limited to, taking phone calls from hospital staff and residents, coming into the facility nights and/or weekends to manage care in the hospital or emergency room.

    This Physician (Cardiologist) position is a permanent, part-time position at 50 hours per pay period (every two weeks). The work schedule can vary and will be negotiated at time of selection. The salary will be prorated based on the part-time tour of duty.

    Work Schedule: The work schedule will be determined based on the needs of the Medical Center.

    Responsibilities

    • Participates in and/or manages all aspects of cardiac patients to include outpatient clinical visits and inpatient visits to the Cardiac Care Unit and inpatient wards, and performs standard inpatient cardiology procedures such as insertion of temporary intravenous pacemaker leads and right heart catheterization.
    • Participates and manages all aspects of standard non-invasive cardiology testing such as EKG, Holter and stress testing.
    • Leads an active role in the evaluation of the patient, decision for treatment/care, and documentation in the patient electronic records.
    • Serves on service level and/or hospital committees as needed and participates in the facility peer review program.
    • Maintains professional competency, courtesy and flexibility and provides the necessary services of this specialty.
    • Possesses strong clinical, leadership, and communication skills with a commitment to academics.
    • Possesses a record of successful practice management and excellent clinical skills.

    Qualifications
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • English: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Residency: Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Board Certification: Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease. This position requires an academic rank or clinical appointment for teaching purposes.
    • Preferred Qualifications:Maintains current Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certifications.

    Preferred Experience:
    • Must qualify for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, as this is a teaching position.
    • Board certification in National Board of Echocardiography.
    • Research experience, including research awards or presentations in national or international meetings, non-industry funded research grants, and first or last author publications in high impact journals.
    • Experience in cardiac procedures such as cardioversion, transesophageal echocardiography, temporary pacer and right heart cath, and management of acutely ill inpatients.
    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements: The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 2 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending.
