Windows Server Operations Engineer

The Windows Server Operations Engineer II is responsible for the provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of Windows systems that support critical Laboratory infrastructure.  Responsibilities for this position includes system administration, engineering and provisioning, operations and support and maintenance of both physical and virtual infrastructure including management of a virtual desktop instance (VDI) environment and the Windows 10 image deployed within.  Additionally, this position is charged with maintaining all related enterprise virtual and physical infrastructure including storage, compute and networking.  This individual ensures that system hardware, operating systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff, and partners.

 

Primary Duties: 

Server Engineering

  • Design and deploy new server infrastructure as necessary ensuring that systems meet DISA security configuration requirements
  • Keep server systems up-to-date with the latest patches and management agents

Operations Support

  • Manage Active Directory infrastructure, user operations and group policy design and deployment
  • Support virtual desktop instance (VDI) environment based on VMWare Horizon including management of Windows 10 standard image, zero-client troubleshooting and deployment and infrastructure support including performance tuning, upgrades and resource optimization
  • Perform daily system monitoring and verify availability of all systems and applications
  • Manage file system infrastructure and end-user data configuration and permissions
  • Address all support tickets as needed

Backup Support

  • Ensure server and VDI infrastructure is backed-up as necessary
  • Run restores for end users as needed

Administrative Duties

  • Documentation of SOPs and server builds
  • Maintain asset inventory of server and storage hardware and location

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or relevant work experience
  • A minimum of 2 years' of experience in the information technology field
  • Microsoft MCSA/MCSE certification for Windows Server 2012 R2 / 2016
  • Strong overall network skills (e.g. routing, switching and TCP/IP protocol)
  • Strong overall knowledge of VMware (vCenter, ESXi and Horizon)
  • Knowledge of Enterprise storage (e.g. fiber, nfs)
  • Understanding of centralized backup software and processes
  • Ability to work independently toward delivery of goals as well as collaborate in team efforts.
  • Ability to work analytically in a problem-solving environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to learn new technologies and disciplines quickly.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with DoD Networks
  • Windows Server 2016, Windows 10
  • VMware ESXI, vSphere and Horizon
  • DNS/DHCP/IPAM Management
  • McAfee agent deployment and troubleshooting

 

Additional Requirements:

 

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a top-secret government security clearance.  Preference given to candidates with existing top-secret clearance.
  • Occasional off-hour/on-call support is necessary. 
  • A certain degree of flexibility of schedule is required as some work (planned/unplanned) must be done outside of major production hours during pre-scheduled maintenance windows.
  • Excellent communication (both oral and written) and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment at times and execute project and administrative tasks with a high degree of quality, while following existing processes and establishing new operational procedures and best practices where necessary. 
  • The ability to work with members of other teams and staff to all necessary department and organizational goals.
