Prod Planning Planner III

Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

Day-to-day analysis of Taipan colored fiber manufacturing and subsequent Finished Goods inventory with the goal of optimizing colored fiber to meet customer requirements. Frequent collaboration with counterparts at other Corning locations in an effort to optimize colored fiber FG inventories.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Scheduling Supervisor regarding inputs to color draw schedule
  • Become familiar with fiber selection tools (Fiber Selection/FIOS) and how to use them to query inventory and create reports
  • Understand what production issues can have impacts on inventory (yields, length, etc.):
  • Work with engineering on yield issues
  • Work with Ops on length distribution issues or alignment on which draws run which colors
  • Be able to determine what is needed to keep color inventory balanced across OFC as well as individually in each plant (fiber or cable)
  • Analyze inventory using queries and reports to determine where there are gaps in length distributions
    • Use IFS tools to balance inventory:
      • Cut at draw
      • N-piece rework
      •  ARM rework (auto-rework)
      • OLC (if capacity is available)


  • Thorough understanding of how to use the Color Inventory Breakout spreadsheet
  • Have regular communication with Cable plants to determine any specific needs:
  • Specific lengths needed for cable projects
  • Specific needs to balance or supplement remnant inventory
  • Back-up for the Scheduling Supervisor

Required Education:

  • 4-year degree/BS in Supply Chain preferred


Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 5 years of experience in production planning.
  • Experience working in a matrix environment or on a cross functional team.


Required Skills:

  • Ad hoc querying and reporting.
  • Experience with SQL and Excel VB (Visual Basic) scripts and queries
  • Experience setting up planning models with Excel
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written
  • Strong organization skills
  • Process oriented
  • Fluent in Microsoft Office


Desired Skills:

  • APICS certification
  • PeopleSoft, SAP, FactoryWorks, and Camstar querying experience a plus
  • Experience across multiple plants or multiple functions.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks
  • Experience with cross functional collaboration.
  • Adaptable and flexible
  • Able to work independently in a dynamic business and manufacturing environment
