    Responsibilities

    Central Texas Veterans Health Care System is looking for a board eligible/board certified internist to join our section of hospital medicine. The CTVHCS is aligned with the Texas A&M as its academic affiliate and is a key education site for medical students and residents. We have two dedicated nocturnists positions. We also have a robust teaching program and an onsite APD for Internal Medicine who also provides direct patient care in addition to the teaching responsibilities.

    Clinical responsibilities of the Hospitalist will be to work within the scope of an internist including, but not limited to the following: admission and discharging of patients, daily work rounds and daily management of patients under their care; initiation and expedition of consults, special tests, or studies; and ordering and follow-up of all diagnostic tests and studies. - Incumbents will provide supervision to the night float resident team and will have a nightly case discussion with the night float resident team on a regular basis as time allows Night time hospitalists in addition to the supervision of trainees also admit patients for the day time hospitalists and provide cross coverage to patients followed by hospitalist service. Night time hospitalists are part of the code team and will respond to all codes and rapid response calls and are designated airway management officers.

    Physicians must comply with VHA performance measures. Incumbents are expected to participate in quality improvement processes.

    Qualifications
    Basic Requirements:
    • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
      (1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
      (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
      (3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.)
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Physical requirements outlined below.

    Preferred Experience: Based on teaching affiliations, Board Certification in Internal Medicine and/or hospital medicine as well as recognition in teaching excellence is highly desirable. Previous experience as a hospitalist or nocturnist is desired because of the nature of this position.

    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

    Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds, light lifting, under 15 pounds, use of fingers, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid permitted); must pass a pre-employment examination.
