Network Switching Systems Operator-Maintainer Details


OVERVIEW
Network switching systems operator-maintainers perform maintenance on electronic switches, control centers, combat radios and other equipment associated with networks. They also use computers to troubleshoot the system when errors occur.

JOB DUTIES
  • Maintenance of automatic switchboards, electronic switching systems, red switches and telephone central offices
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on vehicles and power generators


TRAINING
Ten weeks of Basic Combat Training and 20 weeks of Advanced Individual Training with on-the-job instruction. Part of this time is spent in the classroom, and part in the field.

Advanced Individual Training: 20 weeks, 3 days at Fort Gordon, GA

Some of the skills you'll learn are:
  • Maintaining communication network equipment and switches
  • Operating and installing communication equipment
  • Operating diagnostic equipment specific to network switches


HELPFUL SKILLS
  • Interest in working with network equipment and switches
  • Ability to apply electronic concepts
  • General understanding of math and physics
  • Strong solving-problem skills
