Water Quality Scientist

Reporting to the Lead Water Quality, the Water Quality Scientist is responsible for using planning tools and water quality data analysis to support mine planning and water quality management decisions at Teck’s Coal operations. In this role, the Water Quality Scientist will work with water quality management, mine planning and environment teams to scope and complete water quality modelling to support decision making and regulatory applications/requirements. The Water Quality Scientist will support development, updating and maintenance of regional and mine site specific water quality/quantity planning tools including the regional water quality model and site water balance models.


  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Support maintenance of regional planning tools, including the Elk Valley Water Quality Planning Model
  • Support development/maintenance of site specific planning tools associated with water quality predictions and water balances
  • Undertake water quality modelling work as required to support mine plan evaluations and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain and distribute mine plan and environmental monitoring input data as required
  • Create professional reports on methods and results of modelling analyses
  • Provide support to Teck’s Coal operations for their water quality planning as a component of mine planning
  • Develop and support the use of processes to standardize routine modelling tasks
  • Identify potential water quality management issues
  • Perform other responsibilities as required or as assigned


  • Engineering or Science degree in an environmental science related field (e.g. Engineering, Geochemistry, Geoscience)
  • Three to five years of relevant professional experience with a focus on water quality modelling
  • Mining experience (mine planning or environment) is an asset
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Technical knowledge of water quality planning tools, specifically GoldSim, is required
  • Experience with GoldSim’s contaminant transport function considered an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in both formal and informal settings
  • Professional designation is considered an asset
