Canva’s Commitment and Mission At Canva, we celebrate diversity. We deeply believe that bringing together diversity of thoughts, perspectives and expression is key to building the best product, team and company. We look for many different skills and abilities, as well as how you can enhance Canva and our culture. So, even if you don’t think you quite meet all of the skills listed or tick all the boxes, we’d still love to hear from you! Our mission at Canva is to empower the world to design and since launching in 2013, we have grown exponentially, amassing over 86 million monthly active users across 190 different countries and a team of over 3,000 people… and the best bit is that we’ve only achieved 1% of what we know we’re capable of. Join us and design your future. About the Team: Cloud Runtime builds and supports the compute environment for Canva. Our flagship product is Container Orchestration. This product provides a platform for running containers, while providing an operationally excellent runtime experience for those containers “out of the box”. We take the lead in providing security, cost and operational tooling to make things easy for the rest of our Canva engineers. The team’s products provide the compute power to run all of canva.com and its supporting functions. The platform is being built out to span multiple regions around the world, supporting thousands of containers at any given time. About the Role: We’re looking for a Software Engineer to join the team with a primary focus on helping us build out the Kubernetes-based platform and taking it to a global scale! You’ll work to build a customer-focused, container orchestration platform capable of supporting all of the different team’s across Canva and their diverse set of use cases - from Machine Learning workloads to rpc-based microservices. You would be well suited to this role if you are a self-motivated engineer with a proven background of running and supporting large scale Kubernetes clusters. Canva has a strong focus on impact and ensuring the work that we do delivers true value to our customers and this sentiment runs through this team too.If Canva’s value of “Set crazy big goals and make them happen” resonates with you then you will fit right in. An ability to tackle complex problems and bring about clarity from chaos without sacrificing quality is an essential skill for this role.

What we’re doing

  • Canva has historically run their containers on AWS’ ECS platform. However, recently they have decided to pivot to Kubernetes and are now spending their time building out this capability.
  • Canva growth is phenomenal. In order to support this growth and provide the resiliency that we need, we need to scale out our workloads across multiple regions.
  • Security is paramount for Canva. We are building out our security posture right across the supply chain and this extends directly into the runtime space.
  • What you’ll be doing (your responsibilities):

  • Solving large-scale problems by participating in the process right through from design, to implementation and, operation
  • Ensuring the team culture thrives
  • Collaborating with teams both inside and outside of the wider Cloud Platform group and helping set a strategic direction that is aligned to our customers requirements
  • Operating our systems and responding to incidents as part of an on-call rotation
  • Required Skills and Experience:

  • Experience with operating Kubernetes clusters at scale
  • Ability to break down ambiguous problems and drive solution implementation
  • Experience with incremental operational improvement, ideally with demonstrable contributions to upstream open source projects to fix bugs or add features
  • System design and software development skills. There is no specific language requirement but the team mostly lean on Python and Golang.
