Head Of Engineering

We are hiring a Head of Engineering for an Engineering consultancy who has been established since . They provide infrastructure planning, design and management solutions within South Africa. You will manage 20 civil experts from different disciplinaries, build up a bigger team, provide turnkey (end-to-end) solutions from funding to construction, from structural engineering to infrastructure development, from water conservation, demand management and water efficiency strategy to policy development as well as project and contract management.JOB & DUTIESThe Head of Engineering will be required to direct, oversee and manage the work of a multi-disciplinary team of the engineering managers within the line-functions of the Engineering Office (Structural, Water, Transport and Highway Engineering, Civil & Urban Design, Dams and Hydrology, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering) all in terms of the efficiency of operations, financial performance and quality of outputsFurther, the position will require an extensive understanding of the industry, with above-average networking ability: this will be all in order to add ongoing value to stakeholder liaison across the broadest front, so as to enhance Company business development efforts to optimal levelsThe individual will also be expected to carry out any other duties within the defined scope of work as directed by the Company Management of Companys Consulting Engineers and EXCOPerform the role of lead contact-person, point of reference, thought-leadership, general oversight and advice-giving for projects implemented across the various disciplinesServe as key port-of-call for escalated issues received from any of the project professionals and stakeholders involved in implemented projects, as well as from the general publicOver-arching AspectsIn consultation with the Heads of Centres of Excellence (CoE) and Management, prepare the Strategy for the development of each CoE, with regular updates.Convene Annual Strategic Planning MeetingsTake responsibility for the overall financial management and performance of all the Centres of ExcellenceAssume leadership of the engineering knowledge-hub as such, with the promotion of an intensive culture of learning and self-improvement, so that the organization can keep abreast of evolving industry trendsAssist in the identification and/or selection of the latest versions of Standardized SoftwareHelp identify strategic training requirements, facilitate access to training materials and opportunities, the ongoing use of engineering literature etcOffice Operational AspectsUndertake office management duties at Head Office, and also move to bring into company-wide alignment, office operations and procedures in the companys other regional officesSet up standard Technical Documentation, Protocols, Procedures and Quality Assurance PlansAttend management meetings organised from the office of the CEOAttend EXCO meetings as and when invited to participateAssist in the evaluation and management of staff performance, with guidance from HRProvide ongoing guidance and/or support in areas of staff mentorship and coaching, with the support of HRAssist in the resolution of conflict, with corrective action as necessary, to solve performance- related issuesDesign Office AspectsDevelop systems for the development, as well as the checking and final office approval prior to issue, of designs and drawings across the various officesEnsure the archiving of same with necessary back-upLiaise with Heads of CoEs throughoutSynergistic and co-ordination role in respect of a cross-allocation of technical team members from other regional offices to ensure that the available warm-body resources were efficiently utilized and managed at all timesGuiding inputs into Procurement and/or Tender ProcessesGeneral Technical Team Performance Monitoring, Troubleshooting and Problem-solvingOversee Project Reporting and Client LiaisonProvide ongoing inputs towards the improvement of internal company procedures and processesSupport for Business Development & MarketingOngoing inputs into a surveillance of the market to help identify emergent opportunities for business development, with identification of possible niche clientsMaintain relationships with clients to understand their requirements on an ongoing basisAssist with strategy development to steer the companys future in a positive directionAdvice-giving on acquisitions and mergers as and when requiredAssist in the compilation of Proposals, Business Plans and/or Tender Compilation for new ventures Provide ongoing inputs into the review of company strategy, systems, procedures and policies to be in line with best practice in the areas of marketing and business developmentQUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCEBSc Civil Engineering with Pr. Eng qualification (A PMI/Pr.CPM Qualification will be an advantage)15 20 years experience with experience in multi-disciplinary projectsExperience in Skills Transfer and the Mentoring of junior engineersCross-cutting computer-literacy and competence within the various engineering and business applications
