Student Life Science Intern Assistant

Skysong Innovations (SI), one of five non-profit entities that makes up ASU Enterprise Partners, is seeking a Student Life Science Intern Assistant to assist the team a with specific step in the process by which ASU patents new university innovations.

SI is the technology transfer arm of Arizona State University, assisting in the commercialization of innovations that are developed by ASU researchers. It is housed in SkySong, which is located at the intersection of Scottsdale Road and McDowell Road in Scottsdale and is the premier ASU portal providing translational research activities serving the needs of faculty and both internally generated and external businesses. SI builds vital networks between university innovations and a wide variety of regional and global industries.

Compensation will be $12.80 per hour. A minimum of 15 hours a week are required, with 25 hours per week being the maximum.

Selection for this position will be based on considerations such as:

  • Academic performance
  • Experience and willingness to engage in web-based searching for scientific articles and patent documents
  • General interest in intellectual property and technology transfer
  • Commitment and availability for a minimum of 15 hours per week for the full school year term and, optionally, for the summer term if the student remains available in the summer
  • Prior experience (if any) in business, commercial environments, scientific, or legal environments.

What you'll do:

  • Technical analysis of incoming invention disclosures
  • Write reports about commercial viability of inventions
  • Patent searching and preparation of patent family charts
  • US patent law and relevant court case reviews
  • Developing marketing materials for our inventions
  • Generating documents for filing in United States patent applications; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you'll need:

  • Be extremely detail-oriented (very important);
  • Have experience with searching for scientific publications in electronic databases and be comfortable with skimming them to verify date, authors, etc.;
  • Be generally familiar with searching for public documents online; and
  • Be generally interested in technology and intellectual property.

Relevant qualifications:

A current undergraduate (junior or senior only) or graduate student at Arizona State University pursuing a degree in a related field with a willingness to learn and ability to work well with others. Student must be willing to sign and abide by a confidentiality agreement.

Mental demands:

High attention to detail is paramount. Clarity of focus while juggling complex projects or deadlines.

Working conditions:

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions. This position may require some early mornings and evenings to accommodate meetings and events. This position currently requires you to work from the office Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with Monday and Friday optional remote days.
