Software Engineer


Position Overview

The Software Engineer (full stack) implements well-defined technical solutions with limited oversight and works in a collaborative environment to build and deploy effective and efficient products with well-tested code.  The software engineer will maintain strong expertise in the standard tooling used to build systems and will mentor other teams as they make the switch from legacy technologies to the modern development stack.  The software engineer will coordinate with other IT teams to identify opportunities to introduce automation through our Automation Apprentice program and will train others to develop robust automation.


Responsibilities
  • Designs, develops, tests, deploys, and supports API-based systems focusing on industry best practices with a cloud-first emphasis.
  • Mentor development teams in the use of agile techniques and automation
  • Example automation projects can range from implementing Continuous Integration pipelines to setting up automated testing using Test-Driven Development all the way to very specific automations with a wide variety of toolsets.
  • Manages individual tasks and timelines under limited supervision.
  • Seeks continuous quality improvements for supported systems
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

Preferred:

  • Master's degree and/or LOMA certification

Experience and Skills

Required:

  • 1+ years of development experience
  • Proficiency in multiple tools of the full stack covering frontend frameworks, databases and deployments
  • Experience with a variety of general programming languages
  • Experience with relational databases
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new technologies
  • Ability to solve moderately complex problems, drawing upon technical experience, precedents, and judgement
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to explain complex information to various audiences
  • Solid knowledge of Continuous Integration environments such as Jenkins
  • Knowledge of IT automation, Agile, DevOps, and cloud deployment in AWS

Preferred:

  • 4+ years of experience in programming/systems analysis
  • 2+ years of experience in IT automation and DevOps
  • 2+ years Relational/NoSQL database experience
  • 1+ years of AWS experience including Lambda and Step Functions
  • Experience with Node.js and React.js
  • JavaScript/Groovy/Go/Python/Bash
  • Docker/Kubernetes
  • REST API development experience
  • Knowledge of Test-Driven Development.
  • Knowledge of Google Material Design, JUnit, Jest, Spock, Geb, or Cucumber.
  • Insurance and/or reinsurance industry knowledge
