Clinician - 6E Brain Injury/6F Stroke - Acute Inpatient Rehab

UPMC Mercy is looking for a full-time Clinician to support its 6E Brain Injury and 6F Stroke Acute Inpatient Rehab departments!


UPMC Mercy Rehabilitation Institute is one of the leading rehabilitation programs in the United States as well as a dedicated Comprehensive Stroke Center as accredited by the Joint Commission. Our patients have access to state-of-the-art technology and comprehensive services to assist with recovery. Our 6E Brain Injury/6F Stroke inpatient rehabilitation department provides an opportunity to build connections with patients and families as we foster a healing environment.


6E Brain Injury is an 18-bed unit where each patient receives both an individualized and multidisciplinary approach to brain injury care. Brain injury can lead to physical disabilities, as well as long-term problems with thinking, memory, behavior and social interactions. Our staff is specifically trained to focus on the patient’s impairments, functional limitations, and participation restrictions, to guide them to the next stage of recovery. Our team is specially trained in treating patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). The DOC program is for patients with severe traumatic or non-traumatic brain injuries who present to our program in a minimally conscious state.


6F Stroke is a 24-bed unit where each patient receives both an individualized and multidisciplinary approach to stroke care. Patients arrive to the unit debilitated from long hospitalization or injuries and at the end of their stay, they have learned skills to help them be as independent as possible. Our team is responsible for administering blood transfusions, IV antibiotics, IV fluids, feeding tubes, trach care and bowel and bladder training. 


Both 6E Brain Injury and 6F Stroke work together with an interdisciplinary team that includes:

  • Rehabilitation nurses who manage various aspects of the patients' care and education

  • Physiatrist who oversees rehabilitation techniques, medical management and methods of treating and preventing impairment in conjunction with UPMC Mercy

  • Physical therapists who focus on restoring movement and function

  • Occupational therapists who work with the patients on recovering skills needed for everyday living

  • Speech language pathologists who work with communication, swallowing, and cognition

  • Case Managers who help direct each patient's plan of care

  • Neuropsychologists who help treat a patient's memory, thinking, and concentration


Clinicians work in collaboration with their Unit Director, management, and other caregivers to coordinate clinical activities for each shift, develop and educate staff on the unit, and improve the nursing process. Clinicians inspire superior performance on their unit through example, not only by exhibiting their own expertise in patient care assignments, but also by providing ongoing consultation and education for their team, including in-service demonstrations of new devices, equipment, and policy changes.

The Clinician, in collaboration with other health care professionals, applies superior clinical knowledge and skills to achieve quality patient care outcomes. The Clinician is responsible for providing service-based education and clinical expertise for staff including orientation and training, consultation on practice issues and general coordination of clinical activities on a shift basis. They must demonstrate the knowledge and skills to provide care that is relevant to patients under their care, as well as apply principles of growth and development over the life span. The Clinician also must possess the ability to assess and interpret patient data needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs.   • Assumes formal leadership responsibilities for one or more of the following: quality improvement, evidence-based practice, GN or new hire on-boarding.

  • Completes and/or assists with staff performance evaluations for direct reports as applicable.



  • Minimum 3 years of nursing experience

  • Masters degree preferred.

  • BS/BSN required.

  • If BS degree not in nursing, a Master's or higher degree in Nursing is required.

  • Demonstrated competence as a Professional Staff Nurse.

  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.

  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.

  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.

  • Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.

  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.

  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.

  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in practicing state.

  • National Certification preferred.

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Act 34
