About the Census

The Census is the most comprehensive snapshot of Australia and tells the story of how we are changing. It helps us understand what we need now, and into the future. The Census is run every 5 years. It’s one of the largest and most important collections to count the number of people and houses in Australia. The Census asks questions about your age, country of birth, cultural background, living situation, work and education. It’s used to estimate Australia’s population, distribute government funds, and plan services for individuals, families and communities.

About this role

We’re looking for Field Officers across outback Queensland. Field Officers are the local face of the Census. They are crucial in collecting Census data. They deliver Census letters and forms, answer questions from the public and follow up with households who have not yet completed their form. Field Officers work within their designated local area. This role requires flexibility with the need to work across weekdays, evenings, and weekends to ensure Census data is being collected in a timely manner. No prior experience is required to become a Field Officer. Training, supervision and support is provided.

As a Field Officer, you will:

• Undertake online and virtual classroom training on commencement of your employment.
• Use your own compatible electronic device (smart phone or tablet) to receive your workload, and to record and track work completion.
• Receive Census materials, ensuring they are securely stored in your home.
• Deliver Census materials to households and conduct household visits to follow up with residents who have not successfully completed their Census.
• Conduct assisted interviews upon request.
• Conduct field work with safety and care, supporting the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others.
• Communicate regularly with your Field Manager and complete administrative forms (such as timesheets) and other duties as required.

• Have a good attitude and willingness to help others and support the community.
• Ability to read and navigate maps.
• Ability to follow instructions and procedures to ensure work is carried out accurately and safely.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances.
• Demonstrated strong awareness of personal safety, especially when visiting unfamiliar neighbourhoods or homes.
• Ability to communicate sensitively and respectfully, taking into account cultural and diverse backgrounds.

Travel requirements

• You will generally be allocated to work within a reasonable distance from your residential address. In metropolitan areas, workloads are distributed across multiple suburbs, while in rural areas, they may be more widely dispersed.
• You will be required to use your own registered and insured vehicle to travel to work areas.
• Comprehensive insurance is strongly recommended. A minimum of third party property damage insurance is required.
• When using your personal vehicle for approved Census work purposes, you will receive a Motor Vehicle Allowance.
• Additionally, if you are required by the ABS to travel to any Census-related activities, you will be eligible for a travel allowance.
