Description
Young people all over the world deserve a world-class science education. Stile is on a mission to ensure that students are able to critically evaluate what they see in their social media feeds, and feel confident using science and technology to solve the big issues of tomorrow.
Stile is used in 1 in 3 Australian secondary schools, with around 45% of year 7-10 students subscribed. Every week over 250,000 students and their teachers use Stile’s web platform to explore and analyse the science behind the big issues facing us globally, a number that will grow by more than 10x over the next two years as we continue to expand internationally.
That’s quite some reach, and it’s a responsibility we take extremely seriously. When you join our team, you have a unique opportunity to have a massive impact on the future of science education.
We need your help!
As our IT Systems Engineer, you'll be the guardian of our IT infrastructure and cloud services. You'll share the responsibility for maintaining, monitoring, and reacting to our global IT ecosystem. With a relentless focus on security, availability, and scalability, you'll ensure our systems are resilient as we grow. We're looking for a systems thinker with meticulous organisational skills and a passion for learning new tech—someone ready to support our vibrant, predominantly Mac-based Australian office.
What you’ll do
- Troubleshoot technical issues and build effective, lasting solutions — you'll get to the root cause rather than the quick patch, including participating in 24/7 on‑call so the lights stay on when it counts.
- Analyse our IT infrastructure to spot where performance, capacity and scalability can improve, evaluate new technologies for company initiatives, and bring that thinking into budget planning.
- Collaborate across the team to design and develop the computer systems and network infrastructure Stile runs on.
- Own the full lifecycle of those systems and networks — development, installation, configuration, monitoring and ongoing administration.
- Keep projects on track and documentation in good shape, so the team always knows where things stand.
- Help drive Stile forward by championing advances in IT technology, protocols and best practices rather than letting things drift to "the way we've always done it."
- Build and configure server environments and application services, leaning on automation tools so deployments are consistent, repeatable and boring (in the best way).
- Be the escalation point teammates are glad to reach — supporting Office 365, Active Directory, end‑user networking and other client applications and processes.
- Create and maintain documentation people will actually use: troubleshooting guides, network diagrams, server build standards, data reports and operations manuals.
What we’re looking for
- You love helping the people around you, and making their lives as easy as possible
- Engineering is important to you. You want things to work reliably, and be well designed.
- You’ve got significant experience as an IT systems engineer, with the judgement that comes from having seen a few things break.
- Hands‑on experience administering cloud infrastructure and/or SaaS applications, so you know how the modern stack fits together.
- Practical experience with MDM, SSO, email security and privilege management — all the critical systems and controls that keep an organisation safe day to day.
- A genuine focus on customer service, where you take real satisfaction in getting a colleague unstuck and back to work.
- A solid grounding in information security principles that guides your decision‑making, not a checklist you reach for after the fact.
- Confidence working independently, balanced with being quick to learn, ready to ask for help, and generous in supporting others.
- A track record of picking up new technologies fast — you may not know our exact stack yet, but that's never slowed you down before.
We’d also love to see:
- A strong understanding of networking standards and technologies — VLANs, STP, ARP, routing, DHCP, DNS, Wireshark and friends — and the ability to reason about what's happening on the wire.
- Experience configuring, maintaining and upgrading network infrastructure, including firewalls, switches, routers and wireless.
- Strong scripting skills in something like PowerShell or Python, so the repetitive stuff gets automated away.
Life at Stile
We’re here to build something real and enduring. A company that in years to come we look back on and are proud of what we achieved, and how we achieved it.
So, what’s it like working with us?
- Colleagues worth working with. You’ll join an amazing 70‑strong team of teachers, scientists, artists, and engineers. We hold ourselves, and each other, to a high standard, and love what we do.
- Work on something that really matters. In partnership with teachers, we’re coaching students to become problem solvers and critical thinkers. We believe that with a strong command of science, tomorrow’s citizens and leaders are set up to sort the misinformation from the facts.
- Support always. Stile is its people, and it’s important we are creating an environment where you’re supported, happy and able to do your best work. We have strong management and feedback frameworks, and a great benefits program check it out here Stile benefits
- A fantastic office environment. When we can, we spend time in the office. It has a huge central kitchen, lots of places to put your feet up to work and even end of trip facilities if you ride in.
- Flexibility. We expect that you work hard, but you’ll have flexible hours and you’re the master of your own schedule.
- Your own professional development. We’re lifelong learners here at Stile. Alongside teaching you everything you need to know to succeed in this role, we provide a generous PD allowance.
Hours and location
This is a full‑time role based on‑site at Stile HQ (our head office is located in the ‘Paris end’ of Melbourne CBD). Being in the room with the team is a big part of how this role works, whether you’re troubleshooting alongside someone's desk or whiteboarding the next infrastructure project together.
